THE self-elevating wind turbine installer Ocean Ady is seen here arriving
in the Poole of London where it will remain for the duration of a
conference and exhibition on European Wind at Wembley, writes Michael Grey
. One of two installers operated by the Danish company A2SEA, Ocean Ady is
carrying two 45m diameter turbine blades on the afterdeck, which can be
lifted into position by the 450 tonne crane located on the port side of
the ship. A complete wind turbine installation can be carried out with
only four lifts of the crane, with the 93m wide craft moored securely in
position using the four elevating legs which are lowered to the sea bed
during operation. The ship has been employed installing wind turbines
earlier this year at Scroby Sands off Great Yarmouth, while upcoming
operations will see turbines planted on the Kentish Flats in the Thames
Estuary and Barrow in Cumbria.
