Working Winch? Has anyone else used any of these kits?
« on: September 01, 2008, 11:43:44 am »

I have been wanting to experiment with some gearboxes as potential working winch's. I found on e-bay some of the Tamiya gearbox kits. Each kit comes with a motor and various gears for different rations. The biggest draw back to these kits that I see is that they are plastic gears. So perhaps not good for towing but for accessories (anchors etc…) I think they will be fine. The come with low voltage motors 1-4.5volts (seen instructions).

I set each one up to the highest ratio.

Kit 1, Tamiya 4 Speed Crank Axle p/n 70110
Gear Ratios: 126:1
441:1
1543:1
5402:1
Using 1.5 volt battery = 1 RPM
Using 3.0 volt battery = 2 RPM

Kit 2, Tamiya High Speed Gear Box H.E. p/n 72002
Gear Ratios: 11.6: 1
18: 1
Using 1.5 volt battery = to fast for me to count

Kit 3, Tamiya High Power gear Box H.E., p/n 72003
Gear Ratios: 41.7: 1
64.8: 1

Using 1.5 volt battery = to fast for me to count

Kit 4, Tamiya 6 Speed Gearbox H.E. p/n 72005
Gear Ratios: 11.6: 1
29.8: 1
76.5: 1
196.7: 1
505.81: 1
1300.9: 1

Using 1.5 volt battery = too fast to count

...Hi Don...

The best way to make a working Winch is to use a Battery Powered Screwdriver...
The Torque is Brilliant & you can cotrol the power &  speed depending on the voltage used to mdrive it

There is a Posting on the forum showing my winch in my tug...

See my reply to http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12528.msg119032#msg119032.
Again, if you want try two motors then let me know - I intend to use one on anchor winch.

Thanks Norry but I don't think a screwdriver winch would look very good up on deck.
Besides I was thinking of an anchor winch and other things that rotate.
For a deck mounted towing winch you might want to look at this link.

Thanks BJ those should work quite well.  Mostly I just wanted to see if anyone has any experience with the Tamiya kits and how they were used and how they preformed.

I agree definitely not on deck.  But it will provide quite a bit of torque.  I would think that for towing or other heavy lift jobs (crane) it would work out quite well.  Put a couple of limit switches on it and an ESC and your ready to go.

Mostly this was just out of curiosity.  I was looking around this web Sight  (  http://www.servocity.com/html/motors___accessories.html ) one day and the kit caught my attention.  So I went to e-bay and did a search and found 4 of the kits for $10 + $4 shipping.  So I decided to give them a try.  So after assembly I decided to ask if anyone had used them on here.  I have no idea how much weight they would pick up but was thinking of making a platform with a pulley and see how many (if any) one ounce fishing weights could be picked up.  Anyway they are kind of fun to play with, without much $ involved.

Sorry Guys I should have explained a bit clearer...

The Screwdriver Winch is positioned under the deck & the Tow Line is then passed over the Drum of a Dummy Winch on Deck...
When you let out or pullin the Toiw Line it makes the drum of the Dummy Winch Turn...

I have posted pictures on the forum of the winch set up in my "SCOTCH PRIDE" tug under the posting called Towing Winch

Actually I have already reviewed your thread.  It looked good to me for “major” towing.
For now I just have been playing around with different “toys” for usage sometime.  Normally speaking I usually stick to sailboat stuff but at the moment I am waiting for some fittings to arrive so I’m using the Tamiya gears to keep me out of other trouble.

I’m a very slow builder and am currently building the Mary J Ward.  I have been thinking of adding an operating anchor winch.  Of course the Tamiya stuff is too big so if I do I will need to go another way.

Here is a picture of one of the gearboxes – 4-Speed Crank Axle, Tamiya P/N 70110.
It features a worm gear dive with a clutch system.  For the MJW it would need to be about ½ or 1/3 the size.
