I don't know about you's, but I'm sick to death of those Hyacinth Bucket look alikes winging on about those ghost ships being dismantled in Teeside, I mean Hartlepool was until recently a heavy engineering town, where do these people think they are, The Cotswolds. What planet are they one, Hartlepool's a toilet anyway it makes Gateshead look good and that sayin something. Don't these idiots realise that in the present economic climate that there are people that need jobs to feed their families and this work will do just that, are these so called "friends of Hartlepool" just wannabe middle class snobs who are just peeved off that the haven't quite made it and are unable to afford to move "down south", sorry but get a life and smell how s**t real life is.

As for the French carrier Clemenceau, I totally disagree with it being broken up, it should be made safe and refitted for our navy to fly proper jets off, as a viable and real alternative to these two "so called" new super carriers which aren't going to happen anyway.

Totally agree with you as far as Hartlepool is concerned. Dismantling these old ships is a a specialist skilled job and has to be done somewhere so why not there where it will be done properly and keep people in employment. There is a potential growth industry there.

As far as Clemenceau is concerned, the ship was commissioned in 1961 which makes it 48 years old. No way can you refurbish a ship of that age, particularly when she has been laid up for the last 12 years. Anyway, her flight deck would be too short.

It's not just the carrier "they" are complaining about. "Sir Percivale" is also due to be demolished there. I know all about the asbestos in that class as it used to rain down on top of my bunk in heavy weather! But as half the class was built in Glasgow and the other half on the Tyne I really cannot see why "they" are complaining. Also, having been involved in various refits where "nasty sruff" was removed, I can personally vouch for the precautions and care taken during such removal. Good luck to the firm involved.
Sorry, Bartapuss, but as you well know, Hartlepool is by no means the most blighted town on the NE coast. Some of the smaller towns have become almost derilict since the coal mine closures...at least Hartlepool is trying to put itself back together again, which is more than can be said about our N.Tyneside council which is still fighting the old class war.BY.

I seem to recall - not so long ago there were a number of Russian Submarines which were scrapped beside Blyth, Northumberland - and they were supposed to have  'nasty stuff'  on board, but we didn't seem to hear much about that did we?   Awful lot of ships which have met their doom at Blyth under the Scrapman - and not a lot of people have been crying about that.

To be honest - I think it may just be one or two Greenpeace fanatics and their dogooders - trying to upset everyone.   When considering the industries which used to be around there  -  such as ICI & its chemical works - on a good day, you could see the 'fog' hanging over Hartlepool when you used to be fishing off the River Tyne.   But anyway, the most famous thing for Hartlepool isn't it that they hung a monkey - believing it to be a French spy? during the Napoleonic wars. : food for thought eh.....
