There will be lots of Model Boats on Display both in the water & on the tables...Hands-On Boats for The Kids to Have A  Go...Raffle...

    hi i was at the open day on sunday and it was a good day out for the family , the kitchen staff were very nice along with the raffle staff and some of the older gentlemen were really friendly , but i must say i used to go to this club and help out when i was younger and in my opinion it wasnt as good as it used to be , they used to have explosive charges and put on major displays for the kids with steering an docking competitions and mini war fights with jimmy paxton doing all the commentary for it . my parents were the members and havent been for a few years but we all agree there is a lot required to bring it back up to the old standard especially with some of the middle aged members attitudes towards the public around the static display area . in the past when a stranger arrived at the open days they were welcomed by everyone but on sunday my family and friends felt as if we weren`t meant to be there by the above mentioned middle aged members.

this is just my opinion and i hope i havent offended anyone but i do believe that this may help to bring it to your members attention , as i said the older ladies and gentlemen were the friendliest members i have met and couldnt fault them

I am a member of richmond unfortunatley I was not there on sunday but I am sadend about how you felt when you went down to the club.
I don't know if you were aware that the pyro-technic (mock battle) shows are not allowed now as it would cost far too much for training and
insurance etc for the club to put these shows on. Also it was getting to dangerous to do and this is why it was stopped.

Hopefuly if you are coming down again you can send me a PM and we can have a sail together

I am also a member of the Richmond club and am dismayed at the way you felt you and your family were treated,I was as the show on Sunday and manned the static display on and off throughout the day,but I can assure you ,that I for one ,actively encouraged members of the public ,young and old to come in and look around and answered any questions asked to the best of my ability,after all ,is`nt that the purpose of the show ?
Please don`t let your experience on sunday put you off attending future shows,get in touch with me  (or  gingyer)and we can meet up at the club and have a chat and a cuppa(my treat )

What a Day we had again...The Weather was brilliant ( at least it still was when I had to go awayto work at 4pm...)
The Crowds were Mingling, Chatting & Drinking Refreshments and enjoying themselves throughout the afternoon...

Thanks for posting the pictures Brian...They are Smashing...The Harbour Layout was looking Brilliant Again...

Pity about the experience that VTS99 and his family endured...If only he had said something to one of us about it at the time, we could have explained why there are no more Pyrotechnic Shows...

VTS99, You are most welcome to come along to the Club some day & have a cuppa & a chat & let us show you some of the Improvments & Developments that we have made inside the Clubs Facilities...

Anyway...Back to the Open Day itself...A Smashing Day...I thought it quite Funny and Ironic when I was doing the Raffle and asked for a visiting volunteer to draw the Main Prize...(A Remote Controlled Quad Bike)...A Young Girl in the Crowd was very quick to put her hand up and come forward to pick the ticket....She then proceeded to pick a ticket which belonged to her Fathers Friend...
Ah Well,,. Thats the Way It Goes Sometimes...

So, Well Done Everybody at the club....It was a Brilliant Team Effort...

hi now i understand about the pyro shows etc but what i was meaning was there was a certain member who asked us to leave the static display area in case we damaged the models then proceeded to put a rope across the entrance to keep the public out whilst he sat an talked with his friends . and later in the day i did see other members letting the public in and being the nicest they could to everyone , so my wife and i agreed that it must just be the select few members that werent friendly . and like i said earlier the other members i met were the friendliest i have ever met and was actually thinking of a membership at a later date if i was allowed because i always say you cant judge a book by its cover and never tar everyone with the same brush

i am not wanting to argue with people i was just pointing this out . but when i was a kid the display was twice as big and all sides of it were open so the public could see all the models easily and if anyone had any questions about the static display models or the club there was always a friendly face nearby to help out . i was only pointing out that someone made us feel un welcomed i am sorry if i offended anyone MARK  like i said earlier when people like jimmy , alice and alan paxton along with george and liz gourley were there along with a lot of the older members it seemed like there was a lot more going on for all ages and a lot more competitions and events . not just a wee nipper race and a raffle. my family alone had seven boats at the club and altogether all the old members had nearly 200 boats between them and at least 50 sometimes more in the static display area. yes it was cordoned off for members to access the inside of the area but the public could walk around the large tent and see the models . there was also competitions for young and old members i.e. steering and docking etc i was only pointing out that a lot of the old traditions had been lost in the past 10 years or so and i am sure there is a lot of people who would love to see them again not just us

The steering and docking comps VTS are in August/September
this was only the "start of Season" show which is more like a funday as it always has been
then the regatta with all the competitions are normaly in august/September time (no date set at the moment for this)

vts99 Can I ask your name at all because I have been sailing in glasgow for about the last 19years+ and some of that at
richmond/ renfrew and other clubs so I may know you

no problem al keep that in mind colin . my names graeme kydd my mums jo who used to help run the kitchen with liz and alice and my dads david who owned the londoner car ferry , the perkasa . the weser fire boat and a few others , he also helped display jimmy and alans fleet of navy boats when required and i helped set up the pyro gear in the pond when i could

do u mind me asking what age you are as i do remember a colin at richmond when i was younger

...Hi Guys...

There are not many clubs nowadays that hold Steering & Docking competitions  at their shows...
It seems to have run its course...The Annual Regatta run by the Federation still do them but thats it...This Years Regatta is at Largs on the 2nd of August...
I personally think its due to the hassle that was being caused by modellers trying to handicap the more modern, maouverable boats such as our tugs...We build them to act just like the real boats...
We were being told that we couldn,t use Bow Thrusters whilst competing...Is that not why these boats have Bow Thrusters,, To aid manouverability whilst Steering & Docking...
There were several postings on this Forum  & on the Federation Website about making a new set of rules... but it fell flat on its Ar**...

VTS99... I hope this helps explain why these competyitions are no longer held... And By All Means...Come Down to the Club for a chat & a cuppa...You will be made very welcome...Just dont expect it to be like the old days as our club has changed a good bit as well...

cheers norry for that like i said earlier i was just wondering why things had changed so much cause i asked a few guys about the comps and they werent really sure the only problem i had was the rude gentleman other than that my family and i still had a great day out and would love to come once i get my collection started again as i am looking to buy or build a lot of the old boats my dad had to cheer him up as hes had a bit of a rough time over the past few years . so no doubt once i get things sorted we will both be down to the club to say hi and have a cuppa or 2
