Camping stove canister regulator
« on: July 09, 2009, 09:43:38 pm »

Hi Folks..

Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain a regulator to fit the disposable gas canisters for camping stoves. I have a Model Steam engine that runs on gas but don't have a connection from the burner to a gas supply as the steam engine came from the school I work in. It was about to be taken away in a skip before I squealed and removed it.

It depends on what sort of burner you intend to put on the end. If you look at the ceramic burners (for both vertical and horizontal boiler's) they come with all the required fittings, and most don't need a regulator.  :-))
Make sure you test the boiler though before using it though (saftey first)  ok2

Contact your local camping store and find where they get repairs done. I bought a Coleman butane/propane lantern (that just needed cleaning) and the valve from one of the single burner stoves for $20. The lantern works great and the valve feeds the burner on my model steam launch.

I'm not quite sure yet what you mean by regulator.  You can buy fittings for camping gas bottles at a number of model steam outlets but they are not regulators they are simply fittings to connect the bottle to the burner.  The pressure from a camping gas bottle does not require reducing for use at the burner but you may want to control it to try to remove pressure fluctuations as a result of tempetrature variations or you may want to control it according to boiler pressure.  These are all quite different things so could you be a bit more specific in letting us know just what you are after?

I would be interested in your thought's regarding feedback via boiler pressure.

Hi MCR,

You want to go to Forest Classic's website- I would put a link in but it never works for some reason- just google 'Forest Classics Steam Models'.

They have everything you will ever need to gas fire a model boiler- including the only commercially available boiler-pressure regulated gas regulator- according to how much pressure there is in the boiler it will adjust the flame accordingly.

Hemmens also used to do one, I'm not sure if they still do, and I believe Anton make a couple of quite sophisticated pressure regulating valves.  Usually called a gas attenuator valve it regulates gas to the burner depending on boiler pressure.

Hi folks..

The type of connection I'm after is displayed at this location:

http://www.modelsteamenginesuk.com/acatalog/Gas-Fired_Boilers.html#a2HC

The HC and 7VC show the gas canister with the connection on top.

Hi Declan,

I use one on my gas regulator system.

The gas cylinder valve is used to isolate the supply and the servo controlled gas valve is used to regulate the gas flow to the burner for steam pressure or temperature control.
