Yank takin a walkabout
« on: August 16, 2009, 05:52:22 am »

Hello fellow members,
Well after many a year without much of a vacation, I decided to visit some friends in Telford and gradually work my way down to France. I have built 6 model steam boats over the last few years but have found little company out here on the west coast of the US. There is a pretty good contingent back east but nothing to match what appears to be the interest in England, and France too for that matter.
Question: Does anyone know of any club events etc. that I might visit the first week in October? Really doesn't much matter where. I attended the Leamington Spa show in 2003 and had a great time. It seems there are many model clubs. My impression was that all were eager to have others to share their interests! I'll be headed back towards London mid month so there may be an opportunity then as well. Any info that could be provided would be appreciated. I thought that Westbourne Models might be a good source of event info, so I intend to contact them as well.  While on the subject of Clubs; any of you know how to contact such groups in France. I have not had too much luck in getting a response from the few e-mails I sent out. I am hoping to get to the distributor of Jean Marc Cloups engines a few miles out of Paris. He is a builder of marvelous little steam plants if you are not familiar with his work.
    Love some feedback.
Sincerely,
Dave Gallagher

Don/Dave...... ;D ...in 2005, I purchased a JMC3H...directly from Jean-Marc........mailto:jmc.vapeur@free.fr ....both JMC & Anton have their own WEB sites & yes each complete with their own steaming detail calander/days that they attend [associated clubs]

For whatever reason.........if you post your message via 'bablefish'....English translated to French you will probably get an answer   >>:-( {-) %% >:-o ........Derek

PS....I remember seering your ACS boiler/condensor & gas tank  :-)) all repainted grey a number of years ago...........

When do you arrive? The St Albans show is the last weekend in September and only 20 miles from Heathrow so an easy detour at the beginning of your visit. In fact it's only 5 miles from the road to Telford. Pond included.

   Thanks all!

Thanks for the tips. The St. Albans event sounds like a good thing to attend. It conflicts, I just learned this AM, with the big one hosted by Anton or Fabrice     Bretagne. It too is at the end of Sept. The 28 & 29. They seem to favor the picnic aspect of it all with requests for meal selections and preferred Du vin ! I may be drawn across the channel ! I pulled the trigger on the ticket purchase too soon and won't land in Heathrow until the 30 th. Somehow I have got to make a change-costly? I don't know. I have never changed a fly day.
I would sure like to see a picture of what you did with the JMC3H Derek. Can you post? I'll try the bablefish idea but I got the info. with my limited French from, well I'm not sure, Antons wife? Very pleasant lady. Yeah, there were some nice photos Sandy put up before he...... disappeared.
I'll put up a few pictures of a couple of models never shown on this site Bernard. BTW- you sure are all over You Tube ! Really nice stuff.  Let's see: Je prefer du vin rouge avec du fromage et de la viande tres tendre si vous plait..Gotta practice.

Just a tiny reminder:

Any posts or parts of posts in a foreign language must be accompanied by a true translation into English, please.

By the way, the verb "tendre" is not appropriate for describing food. If you like your meat rare or blue use "saignant". But remember the French habitually eat rare meat and they do mean rare, as in "Just take the hoofs and the horns off"!

With regard to your request to visit French Clubs, you may find it difficult to make contact without reasonable French but try a Web search for "modelisme" and you should get a few clubs. However, I would suggest that French clubs are rather less likely to have a Web presence than British clubs. There is a handful of French Members on Mayhem, I suggest you try another message but using something like "Contacting Clubs in France" in the subject line to attract their attention. Also, I suggest you put it in the board "Chit Chat".

Hi Don....a few points...

1) Moderator Roger has reinforced the need to speak in the French tongue [or written word] if you need help
2) Christrine Bretagne was host helpful when discussing detail of Anton V71 gas regulator purchase [sitting port side of the gas tank]
3) here is  a link to my home photo page on Paddleducks - http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/mkportal/modules/coppermine/index.php?cat=10017
There a few snaps in there that display my general intentions....... {-)

:embarrassed: ....I would have to be one of the slowest builders ........ >>:-(

4) here is a snap from today of my JMC3H & associated bits & pieces

If you do get to a few French marine model steam days ....PLEASE post may .jpgs................

Thanks Gents
Good idea on posting on Chit Chat Roger. Glad to hear there are members in France. Christine sent me the forms to the Atlantic 2009 meet. Looks like a well planned event but the timing won't work. A few days later there is another two day event for mini-vap; I may make that. I've written the Sponsor.
That engine is not one I recall seeing on the current JMC site Derek. I look forward to seeing his work in the flesh. I'll check out your link. Thanks
