Cheddar Gemini Instructions - anybody got some?
« on: November 28, 2009, 08:32:33 am »

I have a Gemini, sitting, gathering dust and waiting for a boat. It is the only Cheddar engine that I bought second hand (from a local shop) and I don't have any instructions.

Does anyone have any they could photocopy or scan. I will happily pay postage costs.

Also on the subject, what steam pressure does the Gemini like and has anyone any experience of the engine (other than dropping one on the floor  :embarrassed:)

Neil - I have the Gemini "Operating, Running & Safety Instructions" together with exploded drawing & parts list.

If you want to send me a pm with your address I'll get a copy in the post to you  :-))

Hope this helps

Does anyone run a Gemini?

I know it's a fine engine, but I don't think I have ever seen one being used.

Any MH&B fans got one in a model?

I am considering putting mine into a Duma Brooklyn. I bought the kit years ago with a view to putting a Puffin in it and then the Gemini engine came along.

I'll get the photocopies in the post tomorrow morning - hopefully you'll get them Tuesday  :-))

I have a Gemini that's (almost  %)) in an MHB Topaz that I've been building for longer than I care to remember......

Hopefully I'll finish it over this winter.

I have one running happily in a Krick Victoria and another unrun with a Kingston Mouldings Duncan as the intended hull.

what does it run like Guy? I have heard they are very economical with their steam use, but run best at higher revs.

I'm no expert Gleen so the best I can say is that it runs well in this boat with the MkII boiler supplied by Cheddar.  It certainly seems to be economical with steam.  WRT engine speed, yes it's a little engine and likes to run at reasonable revs. but pushes the Victoria along as fast as you'd want.

Wow, great replies.

Mark, you are a gent and I definitely owe you a pint.

Guy, what kind of steam pressure do you run the engine at?

I assume that if the engine likes to rev, then smaller props are the order of the day. I remember when the Proteus was launched, they had it turning a 75mm prop at speed and boy did it move that launch. I think they also used to run it with a 100mm prop, at lower revs and it would still go well.

I have another project to finish before I start on the Brooklyn. I am currently converting a big twin prop tug from electric to steam, using a Proteus boiler and a Pegasus V4 engine. Once it's all sorted I'll post some pictures.

Anyone else have a Gemini, we know they like to rev and they don't bounce, but It'd be good to hear from more owners.

Hello,
a few days ago at last  I have just received my Gemini engine witha MH&B return flue horizontal boiler. A beautiful steam plant but alas, as always, without engine instructions. I will be thankful to whom can scan and send them to me.
Cheers and thank you.

Giovanni. Mark is very kindly sending me a photocopy of the instructions for the Gemini. When I get them I will scan them and e-mail them to you.

Let us know how you get on.

Guy, what kind of steam pressure do you run the engine at?

Neil

IIRC (I haven't run it for a while) the safety blows off at 60psi and I have the electronic gas valve set to shut just below that.

Given thta I doubt the accuracy of some of these small pressure gauges, that's about as accurate as I can be I think

Cheers

I have passed the favour on, as I have scanned the instructions and e-mailed them to Giovanni.

I'm sure there is a breach of copyright somewhere, but I doubt anyone at Cheddar would mind  >>:-(
