Hi all and thanks for reading.
Im new to the forums obviously and am on my 2nd wooden rennovation project and need some advice please,.

I brought a hull from ebay thinking that there was some paint cracking to the rear of the hull and as it turns out its worse :(
Heres a pic


Now i need some advise on how to fix it.
Im thinking the following.
1 - Sand back to wood
2 - Fill in with 2 ton epoxy
3 - smooth over with glass paper
4 - Several layers of wood yacht varnish.
5 - 2 layers of glass resin allowing to harden for a week between coats.

Does this sound about right.?

Oh dear, think I would go down the road of opening the crack up on the inside and outside with a very small "V" cutter in a dremel and then running resin into it, sanding back when hard. Others will probably have better ideas.

Did think about opening it up, i have a dremel and fine circular blade so if everyone else is in agreement it looks like i've got an interesting weekend ahead of me :)

Careful with the circular blade, you could end up with two pieces

Hi Keith,

I would miss out step 4 - I think the resin might melt the varnish.

My thoughts for repair
Do you have any 'dental burrs', put that in your drill and clean out any loose material - inside and out.
Car body filler applied from the outside to seal the gap (wont react with paint).
Apply either 24 hour epoxy or CSM and fibreglass resin from the inside.

Seems a strange place to crack!! If you have doubts as to the strength of the structure it might pay to cover a larger area with the fibreglass

It looks like it was dropped onto it's rudder. The crack has shock-waved along the boat. The damage may go further than you can see under the paint or varnish.

You may have to 'Glass' the insides, as advised, to hold it together.

Hi Rangler........from the photograph.....it is difficiult to comprehend such cracking in a wooden hull....please post a few more .jpgs of the corresponding cracking from within the hull....something is not KOSHA here ... - Derek

Looks as though it`s cracked along the edge of a beam inside the hull

I would cover the crack with masking tape on the outside and the use resin and either CSM or a close weave cloth tape on the inside...the resin will fill the crack,when cured,remove tape and sand smooth

Unfortunately i cannot see inside the hull that much due to the bulkheads being in the way.
I'll get some more pics and post them when i get home..
If i sand back to the wood and fill with 2 ton epoxy leave to set for a week then use some fine tissue and glass resin over the top to add strength that should do surely.?

Its not leaking into the hull..

I managed to find a dental minute dental drill so ive sanded back to wood.

Me ? Bit late now but i would have pulled the crack together with permanent mechanical screws/bolts/ties after using epoxy as a joint/sealing agent. Clean off the excess before or after curing...
