Yes - I'm sure you would, but the problem isn't the poor sods who have to try to answer the calls. It's the imbecile "managers" who think that efficiency = cut the staff by 50% (to "shine" upwards and further their own careers) and tell the rest they can look for another job too unless they take up the slack.

This Department has been trashed by political interference and gung-ho management. The staff are suffering from change-fatigue, total lack of direction and purpose, and crappy conditions. A bad press doesn't help if you're trying to do your best, either. Morale does not exist any more (official). Don't write complaints on a model boat forum; write to your MP!

What staff are left are probably engaged in spending all thier time herding illegal aliens out of trucks and directing them to the nearest hand out centre because of the countries 'open door' policy. Now thats demoralising!

The great trouble with all these organisations, be they government or private, is that the over-educated lackwits who "manage" them and create the problems are never the ones who have contact with the customers.  Higher management is even more insulated from reality, and usually take the view that as long as they can show a large profit, or whatever performance parameter is deemed worthy by the minister, they are safe from the angry mob with the pitchforks, tar, feathers and sharpened stakes that would be their just lot if they could be found.
There, that feels better.

Would that it were even that cheery. The Preventive work was subsumed into that dubious and expensive monolith called the UK Border Agency, while what was left of the former VAT and Excise staff are just bag-carriers for much higher-grade, better-paid and less-trained ex-Inland Revenue officers. The Revenue clerical staff here in Nottingham all view a career move to Capital One's Call Centre as a hike up the ladder, while the Daily Wail still harps on about feather-bedded civil servants with inflation-proof pensions (not worth much these days, huh?). Must be a parallel universe somewhere.

Malcolm - I've just seen your deliberate spelling mistake  :-))  You have it in one; "bring on the Bean Counters". I got out in time.

To be honest I don't care whose fault it is, I just want to get to speak to some one to find out why they want my money.but I thought this was interesting a morning newspaper.

Tax avoidance

THE taxman is quick enough to chase you for unpaid bills.

But the boot is on the other foot if YOU want to question something.

Barely half the 103 million phone calls made to HM Revenue and Customs last year were answered.

What's going on? They can't ALL be asleep.
