spektrum radio advice please
« on: July 13, 2010, 07:41:28 am »

Hi,

I am planning to build a tug soon and wondering about radios.  I checked out a local club a few days ago and many of the members are running the dx5e radio.  It works well and is reasonably priced.

I am wondering about the difference between it and the dx6i.  There are some obvious differences, the digital display, I think the dx6i has model memory for additional receivers and of course an extra channel.  I really don't think I need all the channels but it's nice to have options.

I really don't know how they are all set up as most are made for heli or airplanes.  If using the dx6i on a dual motor/esc setup, can it be setup to mix the steering and throttles?  For example to slow the inboard motor on a sharp turn.  There are mixing modules that can be purchased for this but I'm wondering if the radio can be set up to do it.

Are there any good guides to how to set up a multi channel radio and what the options are?

No doubt you will get some specific advice but you can also Google and download the Spektrum manuals which are full of information although it is of course biased towards the flyers.

I am more than happy with my Dx5i. I have used it in both a yacht and a steam boat without any problems. Do a search for Spektrum in these forums and you will find lots of advice including how to locate the hidden Mode switch on the Dx5 to change which channels work off the ratchet stick. This is useful in some boat applications. Cheers, Ian.

The main difference between the DX5 adn DX6 radios is that the DX6 is menu driven and has a veryu wide range of adjustments and selectable options.   As Colin has said, the manuals are all available online to download and make the differences very clear.   there are technicla differences as well but these are of limited relevance for model boat use.   As Kiwimodeller says, a search on this forum will find lots of info and a search of the Model Boats magazine site will turn up a couple of articles including a review of the DX5e.

Why not try not cheaper 2.4 ghz radios,
Planet,Giantcod etc.
I have the Dx6i and it is more than enough for a boat, designed for the flying fraternity,I have the cheap ones as well quite adequate for our needs

One Dx5 that was tested had a wayward neutral point, caused servos to operate more one way than other.
Not heard the same about the Dx6.

I have a DX6, not the 6i. It is very moody, works one day, not the next! I have managed a cure by changing the Model Mode to model number 2 or 3. This returns the set to default settings and you can start with a clean sheet. You can programme just about anything into it, but it seems to baulk at having information being changed.

I have a 5e and it works fine. I had a 6xi, but found that the programming was too complex. I bought it for the memories, and the fact you can bind different types of Rx to different models, but decided to go for simplicity and and now buy Giant Cod basic sets. The receivers are cheaper too ok2. You can buy a complete 4 channel Tx and Rx combo for less than a Spektrum Rx :o

I think I noticed you were in Canada so Giant Cod is no use to you, but you should be able to find a supplier of cheap Chinese 2.4Ghz sets.

Over the last few years have had a DX5, DX6, DX6i and now have a DX7se.   All brilliant sets especially when coupled with the HK Rxs.

I've recently bought a DX4e and Orange RX. All came to a few pence over £40 posted. Fingers crossed, so far all seems to be working well. No frills 4 channel which is more than enough for me. Though it may be a bit too simplistic for what you need. A doddle to modify/alter the spring/ratchet if need be too.
