about words used to represent models..

Hello, respected members...i was confusing with some phrases used to indicate ships..will any one clear my doubt about these words ..is...  CORVETTE, FRIGATE , FLOWER CLASS, DESTROYER, CRUISER , SWEEPER, PT...etc...whats the actual differences between them...?

Ships are generally made for specific tasks, so they will be designed with specific features. A Minesweeper, for instance, is likely to be smallish, manoeverable, with lots of equipment on its stern for towing mine destroying equipment. A Destroyer is a heavily-armed escort ship designed to be fast and able to defend against aircraft, submarines, etc. Most ship types have changed their role as the years pass, but often kept their original names, which can cause confusion.
