Anyone built a SEEKADETT?
« on: March 27, 2011, 09:18:33 am »

Hello!
The website of MHB says that they will stop the production of Topaz and Seekadett. It's a kit that's in my mind since a long time (as I live at the lake of Zurich and know escher Wyss quite well) and now this would be the last chance (although I do not have the time for building another model just know...).
Who has bulit the kit and woulde tell the experiences with it?
Thanks a lot!

Dear LIVESTEAM,
You can find a very comprehensive story of building procedure for DER SEKADETT steam launch from MHB kit on modelismonaval.com steam forum.
Hope this will help.

Thanks ENGINEMAN! Unfortunately I don't understand a word of Spanish, but still it's a very useful story of building just because of the pics! A great build..!  :-))

Hi, I am presently building Der Seekadett. I bought the model last year. Did the steam engine last year and just fitted it for the first time in the hull. I also use the photos from the spanish website. It gives a good help as the instructions are not that extensive with information. You can use the English translator at the site.

I will make a picture of mine and will put it on here

Very nice! How much water does the boiler hold?

Thanks,

The volume of the boiler is 1,2 L; usable capacity 1 L. The unit is flue boiler with cross tubes, internal vertical flue and return tube, made by MH&B

Oh quite a big boiler, I guess you get a long running time with it.

Hullo JJS....that is a very good looking & interesting package.... :-))

the engine...is it from Anton?
the lubricator is from Winfried Niggle
the gas regulator & gas auto shut off ...are they from JMC?
who is the manufacture of the gas tank &...assumed similar low profile de-oiler condenser?.........
& very tidy [true+horizontal+vertical] tube work displayed too O0 .......Derek  :-)

Hi Derek,

The engine is indeed Anton, gastank and condensor are MH&B. It is the steam plant package which goes with the Seekadett model. I added flyweel, the Niggel oiler and Anton gas regulator and steam whistle . My only fear is that the plant needs on a "diet"  :-) when at sea, as the Seekadett hull is a light displacement hull, and the additional weight i have put into the steam plant could put it to deep on water line.

According to running instructions it should give 35 minutes of running time, but i am not sure if this is bound to the water capacity or gas capacity. I did not yet do a long running test with the plant. My feeling is gas capacity is the limiting factor, but as i have fitted the gas regulator i suppose i will get some longer running times.

Here the Anton regulator / pressure drop shut of valve

JJS..... I have a V71 gas regulator from Anton ...however it yet to be commissioned  <*< ..please keep us posted with your Seekadett photographs.........

With your Anton V7? gas control system........& hence gas saving  :-)) .....I suggest that boiler water will be the limiting factor.......... Derek

Hello JJS :-)
I would agree with Derek, according to the size of your gas tank: you'll run out of water before gas. So be careful , and watch your water  level to find out what is the safe time of sailing.
Your propeller is very nice and , it does not need a lot of RPM to move the Seekadet, so I wouldn't be surprised that by running smooth you get 45 min sailing & even more. above all with the regulator and no more than 2 bars pressure setting.
Let us know, it will be useful datas !

Did a duration running test today with full gaz tank and boiler. The lever of the anton coupe gaz V 70 arms nicely at 40 psi, took 15 minutes to get to 40 psi. I have the impression the gaz regulater V 72 does not really regulate, but give only a very low gaz flow. gives only a 15 to 20 psi pressure on running. After 90 minutes i run out of gaz it only consumed half of the boiler water, i have run the engine  for over an hour, but on low speed because i could not get pressure above 20 psi during runs. Limited factor seemed to be the condensor tank as it was ejecting water during running. The V70/V72 are nice pieces of engineering but i have a doubt if they work properly. Any one experience with these?  I am going to make a run without these installed but have first to make a bypass gaz line for it. Keep you posted on next duration run.

Regards
