Tamar vs Severn
« on: June 19, 2011, 11:44:40 am »

Without stating the obvious, I would like to know how the Tamar Class and Severn Classes' hull shapes differ.

When looking at the info below I guess it would as the Severn is not a slipway launced boat.

Tamar:

Introduction - 2005
Length - 16m
Speed - 25 knots
Weight - 30 tonnes
Construction - Fibre reinforced plastic
Launch type - Slipway or afloat

Severn:

Introduction - 1995
Length - 17m
Speed - 25 knots
Weight - 41 tonnes
Construction - Fibre reinforced composite
Launch type - Moored afloat

Interesting to note that the Severn weighs a third more than the Tamar.

If you can find a picture of the two boats together, you would see why,

The Severn is much bigger overall
The 1 mtre length difference belies the true size diffs..bigger beam, bigger superstructure, heavier engines.

Lots of considerations as to her heavier profile. :-))

Thanks nhp651

Where would I be able to find photos of both, preferably in dry dock so I can compare hull shapes?

www.lifeboats24-7.co.uk in the gallery. This is a good place to start. There are some differences in the bow the Severn is designed to stay afloat where as the Tamar is designed for a slipway so has to cope with hitting the water when its launched. There are some differences at the back as well the Tamar has semi tunnels and small bilge keels to protect the props where as the Severn has bigger bilge keels.
At the end of the day they are both designed to do a fantastic job in the worst of weather which they both do extremely well.

Thanks Number 6 and johno52-11,

Why I am asking all these questions are:

1) I have a set of GA's for the Tamar (recieved it from Adrian at Speedline).
2) These drawings do not include cross sections so one can generate bulkheads at designated intervals.
3) I can source a 1/72 Airfix kit of the Severn.
4) I thought I could perhaps use the Severn Airfix kit's hull shape as a guide to generate profiles for the Tamar.

Am I clutching at straws??

Definateley a good idea! I did that with the Shell Welder. Built it then bandsawed it up at the appropriate sections.  Even though very small (and a lousy kit) after some fudging it worked great.  (Well it looks good 36" long).

Why not buy a set of drawings from the RNLI ??  (I have their set and Adrians set).

@ Mike,

I have contacted the RNLI and from the description I was not sure whether they include a detail drawing depicting the hull shape.

They also require payment via sterling bankers order or eurocheque.

If they would accept credit card details or paypal it would be great but no such luck.

If somebody on the forum has a paypal account and would not mind selling me a RNLI Tamar set I would greatly appreciate it.

@Number 6

That is the lady I emailed.

Due to banking etc logistics it is unfortunately not going to work for me.

The RNLI drawings have lots of useful information including some very nice isometric projections of the back of the wheelhouse and the transom door area and are worth the money for that alone, but alas, lines they don't have.

I should say that given the plans , you can 'generate' the hull sections but its tedious.  I have posted somewhere else on Mayhem about doing this.
