Hello from Norway, got plans to build a car-ferry
« on: May 26, 2011, 07:09:07 pm »

Hello everyone
My name is Gaute and in 1932 a carferry was built that also was named Gaute :-) Sadly the ferry is nolonger among us but I plan to build a 1:24 scale model of it anyway. So here I will need some help. Not really sure where to start, I have collected pictures and info on the real ferry and I'm planning to make drawings for the build. But how?
Here is a picture of the ferry back in the day :-)

Hi there Gaute. Welcome to Mayhem. Nice looking ship. It's not easy to make plans but it is possible. You may be able to find a suitable hull on which to build this model but you may have to build the model to a slightly different scale than you intended. Obviously the more photos you have the better when making plans and bellow the waterline photos are usually the hardest to come by. If you have any specific questions please do not hesitate to ask.

hi gaute,
do you know who the builders of the original ship were, and are they in existace..your first port of call would be there asking for plans.
also the ferry company that operated it, if they still trade.
do you have similar maritime museums in norway to those which we have here, like the national museum of your country.they would also be a place that i would write to. even the town/city that the vessell operated from /too.might be worth contacting for information.

all these places might have something that would help your quest for plans.

Thanks for the feedback :-)) I do have about 30 pictures from most angles stored on my computer but I don't dare to share them here as I don't have the copyright for them. However, I can link to some of the photos here from the sites I have gotten them from.

http://www.fjordfaehren.de/no_f2/gaute1932.htm
This one is a German site with lots of ferries on it, and here is some info on Gaute. As you can see, it looks very different in the two top photos. That is because she was modified in 1957 when the superstructure was moved to the portside. The top photo is the only one in color I have found.
I have also found some pictures on this site: http://www.fylkesarkiv.no/foto/sok?http://www.sffarkiv.no/sffbasar/default.asp?p=result&db=dbfoto&ptype=list_dbfoto_thumbnail&sql=+%28LOWER%28low_motiv%29+LIKE+%27%25gaute%25%27+OR+LOWER%28omtale%29+LIKE+%27%25gaute%25%27+OR+LOWER%28fotograf%29+LIKE+%27%25gaute%25%27%29++

I have sent e-mails to the warf she was built at and the company that ran the ferry from 1955 but no answers so far. I have bought some drawings for other ships that look like they have a similar hull on Ebay and some issues of Marine Modelling Inernational from http://shop.traplet.com/ so I'm waiting for those to see if they can help me get started. I will be guessing what is under the waterline as I don't know the exact hull shape but I do belive that from the mesaurements I got I should be able to get it fairly right.
I know that the length was 75.9 feet and width was 22.5 feet and the depth was 10.32 feet. That info comes from this site:
http://www.sagvaagen-kystlag.no/baatbyggeri/jensanes/gaute/gaute.htm

I have gotten som links to maritime musuems from a Norwegian Transport forum, so I have sent some e-mails and I'm still waiting for answers. The reason for the scale 1:24 is that I got a lot of car kits that would fit very nicely on the deck and that I want to put and engine and radiocontrol bits in to it :-)
I think I got all the question a newbie would have, what would be the best way of constructing? and what would be the best way of planning the build? The 1:1 ferry was built using wood and only parts of the superstructure was steel so maybe I should use wood for the model aswell?

i think only you can decide what method you should use to build her, gaute, as my method would not be the same as someone else's and ask twenty members on here what way they'd build it and you'd get 20 different methods.

i am building a ferry at the moment, see below, and am building a wooden plug to make a grp mould for the hull with plasticard superstructure......but that wouldn't be what others would use, so the choice is yours.

Thanks for the pics :-)) I'm thinking of possibly doing something simmilar to what you have there for the hull but not to cast it (at least that is my ideas now). Maybe covering it in balsawood sheets would work....
Looking around this forums abit and see if I can get some more ideas on how to build it. Many nice boats and ships around here. Has any more people here built carferrys before?

Hello Gaute

Did you begin to build your ferry? I am interested in old ferries so I would like to see  your 'Gaute' build on here. There are a few ferry nuts on Mayhem so you will have an audience.

I found a few photos here http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=no&u=http://www.fjordfaehren.de/ferjesteder/molde.htm&ei=lyMTT6rBNI2r8AP_6sGABA&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=5&sqi=2&ved=0CD0Q7gEwBA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dgaute%2B1932%2Bferry%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D695%26prmd%3Dimvns

As your interest comes from the ferry bearing your name, you might also like to know that there was another 'Gaute'. It was a 1916 Ocean Freighter built by the American Shipbuilding Co and later renamed Forde, Koryu Maru. Plans are available Contact Dave Benedet at:davebenedet@hotmail.com that's all according to http://www.greatlakesmodeling.com/products/canadian_boat_plans.html, though I have seen elswhere that she was built by the Detroit Shipbuilding Co for Norwegian owners. This looks like it is the Freighter Gaute http://www.lardex.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_sobi2&sobi2Task=sobi2Details&catid=207&sobi2Id=5963&Itemid=
