Robbe Najade Sounds Tempting
« on: January 04, 2012, 01:55:41 pm »

Hi all,

New to this forum, and haven't had any previous experience in model boats (but am also a model rail and heli enthusiast).

I'm seriously tempted having had a good crawl round the internet and a couple of model shops to get a Robbe Najade as a pressie for teenage son (for me in all honestly, but I'll at least pretend it's his!)- Bad Dad!

This boat looks a serious proposition, but I'm more interested in what's NOT IN THE BOX than what's in the box, if you know what I mean? I just can't figure what else I'll need to add to the shopping list- for instance, details say "full power chain included"- but what on earth does that mean? I just need to know what's missing, rather than what's included- probably very obvious to some of you but to me it's a complete guessing game right now!

Any advice very welcome!

Welcome ! I suspect you will get all the answers you need from one of our members from Stoke-on-Trent who has a Najade, come on Ghostie.  The "power chain" might be "power TRAIN" , ie universal joint, propshaft, prop and maybe rudder.  We want pics of the build of course :}

Reading Robbe's blurb, all is included except the radio gear and speed controller and batteries.

Robbe Najade
Semi-scale model of a luxury motor yacht to 1:15 scale
Fittings set and power set included
Just like the full-size prototype the Najade features a large, roomy cabin, an imposing flying bridge and a lusty power system to ensure an impressive top speed. The propulsion system is based on a ROXXY 3656-06 brushless motor driving the propeller direct via the propeller shaft; the entire power system is included in the kit. Construction of this superb model is hastened by many pre-fabricated parts, including the glazing which is moulded in clear brown-tinted material.

Please remember that you will also need a Battery charger to suit the type of batteries you buy. Also use a good glue to assemble the boat with. Id suggest Stablit or a similar Epoxy.John.

Hi Paul,

Keep in mind, the 'powertrain' includes some non suitable and substandard material, such as a stuffing box, which is too short, leaving a large piece of the shaft unsupported.

I've read a number of times this causes whipping, and subsequent damage to the bearings.

As all manufacturers, robbe tries to cut the costs of the kit by supplying material they have in their program, regardless of the fact if it's suitable for the kit in question.

The Najades I know that run trouble free all have a decent stuffingbox and shaft installed, not the crap that robbe throws in with the kit.

Regards, Jan.

Thanks for the responses- I've still no idea what else I need to buy unfortunately.

What sort of batteries? How many?
Any particular speed controller?
And anyone recommend a suitable "radio gear"?
And what's a "stuffing box"? Is this something I can buy, or would I have to make one?

Sorry, must sound like I'm dumb but as a beginner I've no idea what some of these things are, nor which are compatible!

Hi Paul,

Here an indication how a brushless motor performs in a Najade.
The motor came with the kit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwwQKfvJJcQ

This is the set-up:
ESC is a car controller: EZ-RUN 150A  Hobbycity.
A 4s LiPo  5000mAh.
Prop is an aluminum 3-blade  ETTI , Ø 33mm.

A stuffing tube is the tube that holds the bearings in which the propshaft turns, you can stuff it with grease, hence the name...

Regards, Jan.
