I grew up on Staten Island, and can verify that the area along the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull is a treasure trove for maritime historians and historians of technology. It was a thriving shipbuilding and ship-repair area up until the years just after World War II. The decline since then has been steep.

the LT-653 (Large Tug) was one of several 149 x 33 foot, 1200hp reciprocating steam tugs built for the Army by Maritetta Mfg. at Point Pleasant, West Virginia in 1944. They were somewhat underpowered for their size and required more crew than a diesel but they were used successfully for ocean towing during and after the war.

Thanks for the info the  Bloxon, sad end, I worked on a couple of the old tugs that were similiar to her years ago, it would be nice if she were avalliable in kit form, or maybe someone knows of a kit that could be converted to represent her. I will have a look for Cape Charles Tugs see what comes up.

Hy Bigford, Many thanks for the link to the plan, I have just had a look,  it,s maybe a tug to far for me at the moment !!!, them plans look a bit to complicated, I can scratch build on a bought hull, but plans, now thats another thing,!!! ???.
