1935 Surf class Lifeboat
« on: June 28, 2012, 04:14:54 pm »

Hi can anybody help me. I am possibly looking to try and build a Surf class Lifeboat for display at my local station. I have some plans from the RNLI but these are for the Hopkiss version and do not show the propeller tunnels. Can anybody help me out with any info, pictures or some drawings of the frames or the boat so I can build the Hull etc.

Thanks John

If you can get hold of the pamphlet 'The Surf Lifeboats-A history of the light 32ft Surf class of motor lifeboats' by Nicholas Leach (ISBN 0 9513656 2 2),there is a very small drawing of the Rosabella (the only surf boat built with twin tunnels & screws) on the cover.

I've never seen any photos, but she was stationed at Ilfracombe, so they might have some.

Hi many thanks for the replies got some info from them. Have tried the normal places ie Lifeboat House, Museum etc but most photos are of her in the water so do not show what I want, There is one in a Museum but without the tunnels but cant remember were.

Thanks John

Hey John, I hope this doesnt mean you are going to put the Mersey on the backburner. You could try a PM to Neil, to see if he can help with the surf class?

Hi thanks all for the replies. I contacted the NMM about plans and they sent me through what they had. Price for the 1st plan £38-00 and then £17-50 each after that. I think I will try and use the one from the RNLI only cost £6. No Mick the Mersey is still on the go having a couple of problems at the present.

John,Richard should contact you tomorrow re the preserved Suf Class Lifeboat that is at Poole,at the old Lifeboat house.Nothing to do with the RNLI, but you will have to contact someone there to arrange a visit, and take all the photos and details you need. I am useful sometimes!
