new member needs help Identifying boat
« on: July 21, 2012, 09:26:04 am »

hi all
I'm new to posting on mayhem and I'm hoping some one out there can help.
i have a model boat i need help with Identifying.
there is a littel story behind this boat. i went to pickup 3 boats from a person who lives quite local to me.
one was a steam drifter. number 2 was a orcer from he film jaws and 3 was a northubrian coble.
when we went in to the workshop to look at the boats i spotted a yacht sitting on a shelf an recognised it as a boat i built when i was in my early 20s
even the wife remembered it. so i bought the 3 boats from the guy and as i was leaving he gave me the yacht as a present well that just made my day (thanks bill if you are reading this.)
so for the life of me i cannot remember who made the kit  she is 39in long x 5in wide and 9in tall to the top of the funnel the boat is balsawood and ply and has plastic fittings and the windows are preprinted.and has the name emerald on the bow. hope this helps you all. the plans and box are long gone.so any help would be great as i want to rebuild her.
hope someone out there can identify her.
thanks for all replys in advance
regards
Mick

Hi, I recognised the boat but I was trying to remember the name of the kit PBM I believe they were from AA Hales of Hendon N.W. London,
By chance I am finishing a tug boat kit that came from the same shop, It has helpful notes on constructing Billings kits.
PBM also did a nice little tug boat called Alfred as well and I think a paddle boat.

Looks nice one of our club members has one and another was built about 30% larger from the plans.

Greta in Model Boat plans is a very similar boat as well.

PBM were Patrick Blount Models, there was the Edwardian Steam Launch, paddle steamer Ailsa Craig,  harbour tug Alfred, and an Oil Rig Support Vessel.

I built the paddler many years ago, a lovely little boat, very easy to build. Somewhere I have a magazine with  a full colour advert on the back cover of the PBM range, I'll dig it out, scan it, and post it up here if it would help?

I believe there was also a warship in the range as well, maybe even two? The little grey cells are struggling here...  :embarrassed:

hi rich
the scan would be a great help. i remember it was some time in 1978 or early 79 i built her. as i got married in 1977. and it was about a year after the wedding( and yes my wife is very tolerant of my hobby's lol  :} before some one asks )
then as time passed i sold her to a club member and wished i had kept her. (the boat not the wife lol ). but its funny how things come full circle and this time the littel yacht is staying with me.
and she will be sailed after a refit. and  renamed Christine after my wife.
i am greatfull for all the information i can get on the kit. and for all the help from the mayhem's.
by the way i have a hfm marine kit still in the box its the oil rig support ship they did so i think its time i built and sailed it as well.

Yep, and a Leander at 29 1/2" long. Back cover of Model Boat Special ( the one with free plans for HMS Amazon) shows them.

I'm always amazed at how helpful members of this forum can be. Bought a tug a few years back with an anchor symbol on the funnel, didn't recognise it so posted a pic on the forum, had several people come up with suggestions, wasn't until a year or two later I met one of the members and discovered he had searched through multiple books in an attempt to find it for me!

Unfortunately your Victorian Steam Yacht looks in a lot better condition than mine, my one is definitely a project!
