Survey sticks ! on Russian TB's
« on: August 29, 2012, 05:27:27 pm »

Hello all,
While checking out potential build subjects, a number of Russian TB's have what appears to be survey sticks on the fore walkway area (please excuse the lack of nautical terms - I'm ex-Army  :P).
Most of the ships are in the 1890's - 1905 time period, but as far as I can see not all the TB's of the period have this feature.
So - could a knowledgable person please assist in explaining what and why this item is on board a boat (same location on various class TB's) and help put my curiosity to rest.
Any assistance is most gratefully appreciated  :-)).

Looks like a boat hook if you look at the after end , aft of the guy holding on.
Or am I completly wrong

It does indeed look like a boathook.

That was my initial thought too, however the boat hook is actually just below the 'survey stick', if you look carefully you can see the pole below the striped pole.
I'm having a quick look for a photo with a better view. But the couple of photo's I've looked at the 'survey stick' appears to be hollow tube and the boat hook is solid wood.

Seems similar to the item mentioned in the link above. We never really did discover what it was for.

The only thing I can think of is the red/white or green/white poles we used to have as danbuoys  - somewhere in the middle would be a watertight
container into which the pole would fit with several feet sticking up in the air to mark the position of waterever was floating in the sea, and there
would be a weight on bottom to act as a counterbalance
Sorry it is the only idea I had.

Colin, I'm sorry but I really cannot see any correlation between these two completely different items - one being a flimsy piece of tube and the other being a very solid wooden bow fender.

Hi Turtle,

Could be possible that they're just what you suggested in your original post.

If the boats in the pics were in the Black Sea Fleet, the passages to & from the Sea were very shallow at times and it could have justified some form of depth indicator to be carried as a matter of course. I'm sure others on the forum would know a lot more about this than me but..... :D

Nice project!

Cheers Tony,
I think you might be heading in the right direction with that  :-)).
And yes, the TB in the first photo was part of the Black Sea Fleet (Izmail Class), still lot's more research to do before some hacking and slashing of wood and F/G and brass and plastic and .......... , but then again that is my second choice for a build   O0.

Ok - So whats the first choice Eh?????? <*< No need to be embarrassed!

Oh, and while I was looking at sounding poles, most had hollow ends for filling with tallow so the 'ground' could be checked.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for that snippet of info. Hopefully I'll get a chance to delve a bit deeper into this item on my weekend (Monday/Tuesday).
At this point and time the first choice build is  :-X .
Okay then, the plan is for a Boiki Class TB in 1:35th scale - still a little bit undecided as that is right at the extremes for me to comfortably transport the completed boat (1830mm), I have recently knocked-up a basic expanded foam hull to see how it fits in the 'shopping trolley' (nearest boat pond is 50km away), also did a quick mock-up of the Izmail hull  :o , if you think your Arquebuse handled like a dog then I'm convinced Izmail will make that seem like a walk in the park, it will have to have a detachable false keel to gain even a smattering of stability. But then that's half the fun and challenge of building these types of vessels  ;).

Hi Roger,

Good to see that Boiki has a 'pointy thing' as well!  It'll certainly be an easier build than Izmail, if only from a weight point of view. To get a 3ft boat down to under 2kg could be a touch interesting. I look forward to the build, whichever you choose!

Good Luck :-))

Cheers Tony,
Can't have you having the only boat with a 'pointy thing'  {-).
Weight shouldn't be too much of an issue, as a friend is willing to assist me with working with carbon fibre (doesn't;t know what he's let himself in for  %%).
I'm still grappling with one technical issue before commencing with a build - just trying to figure how best to do the rudder setup. Sounds simple enough but as I also want to do the hull as a waterline split hull (no deck hatches  etc. to worry about), so a split waterline hull plus a tiller type rudder system plus the cut-back rudder equals a lot of head scratching (might have start a new thread asking for suggestions  :embarrassed:).

Hi Roger,

If it were me, the simplest option would be to cut the lower hull straight across just head of the return in the rudder and include it in the upper hull unit. I know that it may not be spot on  but it would (a) be below water and (b) be disguised by the prop guards. Also, if you are plating the hull, the after edge of the closest plates could be a loose overlap over the stern ones.

May not be 100% 'right' but........

Had a chance to do some experimenting and my initial idea will work  O0, the plan is to only slightly enlarge the tiller arm and machine a slot into the rudder stock and a corresponding slots in the tiller arm, then with a capture/locking nut hold in place - when it comes time to separate the deck from hull before/after sailing it's merely a case of undoing the capture nut and the rudder can be removed and the upper/lower hull halves separated.
Also did a strength test on the scale chain I have just to make sure that part will hold up - success.
Now that the 7 P's are done (prior planning and preparation prevents p**s poor performance) it's time now to unlock the tool cabinet and break out the power tools and start the hull plug.
Many thanks to those that have assisted thus far.
