Part 24 - Stand

... and after many weeks waiting.... an EASY part!

It's not a very strong stand and not very practical for building either but it useful for .......keeping your build on the shelf! ::)

I had my first part failure with part 26.....

This joint has doublers .... that don't overlap the whole joint :-\

Very good fit these parts!

For some unknown reason the rear two parts wouldn't stick, they came adrift 3 times!?!

Part 32 - Superstructure

These are very thin ply that make up a room at the front of the superstructure...
I had quite a bit of trouble as they need to be chamfered so the edges have flats to glue to.
In my opinion a terrible design when the rest of the superstructure is "foolproof" and "over
strong" whereas this part is flimsy, prone to movement whilst gluing,
and prone to misalignment. >:(

With Part 23 AND 36 there is a stern resin piece 70 & 70/A.... I can't remember which came with which issue?!?!?

Bow Planking.... again!

Anyway leaving the resin bits aside for a while, I need to get the first layer of planking completed.
As you can see, there are a few gaps that need filling.
Also, the deck and the hull sides seem to be a different shape... any help here would be MUCH appreciated. :-\

Bow Planking.... again, again!

Filling the gap turned out to be a lot easier than I was making it!
( My mate Bradders says I alwas make mountains out of molehills...
... mole hills are much underestimated in my opinion! ::) )

At first I tried shaping a plank to fit the hole but it far easier to Superglue a whole plank down
and sand it to shape... ... took about 3 minutes to fit sand to shape.... about 10 minutes to
un-peel myself from the hull and superglue... >:(

There is still the problem of the misshapen hull to contend, so as I envisaged quite a bit of sanding,
I superglued in a couple of doubles so that there would still be wood when I finished! ( Only took
me 6 minutes to free myself from the superglue this time..... )

Test fitting the prow and prow deck.

Oh dear!...

But overall..... it does look like the front of a ship! ::)

Right it's been a while but lets have another go.
To be honest, facing the prospect of planking the whole hull again filled me with fear and trepidation ;
1. Because, as I stated at the outset, this is my first wood boat build
2. It's also my first "scratch build"
3. There no real way of checking if the 1st layer planking is correct.
4. I was waiting for feedback from some of you other guys out there to let me know of any pitfalls!

I spent a couple of day trawling the net and looked on several sites about the 2nd layer planking and
decided it was much easier than I was worrying about and so thought what the hell, have a go! Surprisingly
enough, I was able to put my hands straight on all the parts & magazines, my mother would be shocked!

Mark a nice centre line, here I'm using a plastic / mylar strip.
Then wait behind the garden gate , jump out and frighten the living daylights out of the
postie again and pick up all the red elastic bands he drops. Cover the hull in elastic bands.
Grab your first ~~stick~~ plank and off we go!

Remembering all the pain I put myself through last time, this time I damped down the 1st layer planks
with a damp cloth. A slightly damped surface seems to stop the PVA glue soaking in / drying out which
also extended the working time of the glue. I thought I have a go at using Evostik weatherproof wood
adhesive which is said to 'waterproof'. To further aid this processes I also passed each stick through the
lips to damp them down too - THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED PROCEEDURE! Your lips start bleeding after
the fourth plank!!! After wondering why was changing colour and unable to hold my mouth closed, I
started passing the planks through the damp cloth.

I put on the first few planks with no problems, staggering them halfway along the 1st layer.
And I remembered to start them 2 planks down too - Easy!

This method of planking suited me in that it was quick, easy and messy! All I had to do was
damp everything down with water (with a little PVA glue in it.... it isn't waterproof! ),
splurge some glue over the area, spread it out with your finger, slide the planks in place and
position them, wipe off the excess glue. By the end of the first session, I had so much dried
glue on my fingers, I was able to do a bank job on the way home and leave no definable
fingerprints anywhere!

Even 'Little Lindemann' seemed pleased with our efforts.
That enough for the first session.......

The next day however started with the 'cold light of dawn'........

Again, having not fully understanding (reading) the instructions, the 2nd layer planking should not only
be staggered to the the 1st layer but also staggered against itself ie. as in brickwork. Ah! ::)

Well I had to carry on this way to complete the started rows and figured I would stagger the rest.
Very few clamps were needed, so a lot less holes would need to be filled.

"The job's not done till the paperwork is complete!"

Well parts 37 & 38 are the "water cooling inlets" which to me looked like they were
going to be trouble... and they were! >:( The pieces are made out of thin ply which is quite stiff,
neither of mine survived the 'product testing' of the Royal mail as both arrived broken. :(

Well, never mind, "we shall over come". I thought I fix them to the hull and infill the broken bit after the
surviving bits were fixed down.... and that's still my current thinking!

I did try to repair the broken pieces but the ply was too thin to retain and strength.....

I then scored the ply pieces several times on the hull facing surface as per the instructions and then soaked the them in a water / PVA mix in an attempt to make them more pliable.... fat chance! The problem is, these pieces sit on the most curved part of the hull.

Anyway, lets have a go.....

Well the glue dried off over the weekend and I'm gonna say that the ' soaking of the ply' did make a
difference as all the ply seems to have conformed to the contours of the hull quite nicely! .....
.... 'Little Lindemann' thinks some of my handwork stinks! :-\
