Firstly I am a new boy to the site and am impressed with the depth of knowledge that the contributors have although much of it tongue in cheek. Sometimes even rude.!!!!


I run my model using a Futaba T4YF which is 40 mhz. I have recently bought my partner a Caldecraft Puffer ( Christmas present) I am sure she would have preferred something expensive well we have to keep the ladies busy. I digress as usual, I need a second R/C unit and as the 27 mhz and 40mhz starter packs are the same price what should I buy.


Basically I do not understand r/c and take the view generally if it works get on and use it but there must be a reason for the two wavelengths. Which should I buy.


Also the costly animal in the pack is the receiver, do the members shell out £20 plus to have a receiver in each boat or do they transfer them into the boat they plan to sail. Same applies really to ESC.


This job is getting expensive    should have taken up golf.

I think the way to go is microwave. 2.4Ghz stuff. I got a Surmount yacht for Xmas. £100 complete with 2.4Ghz 4channel Tx and 6channel Rx. Extra Rx pennies. Works great. No interference with other sets. No xtals needed. Just bind and go.

^+1. If it's not for a sub then 2.4GHz is the thing to buy. And they're cheap!

The reason for two wavelengths is historic. Originally there was only one - 27Mhz. This was used for everything, boats, planes cars etc. This caused lots of problems with interference between models  (mainly to the flyers) so the 40Mhz band was allocated for surface use, 35 Mhz for planes and anyone can use 27Mhz.
Now we have the 2.4Ghz band which anyone can use because the sets are inherently safe - that is it is not possible to have models using the same channel. 2.4Ghz also does away with the need for a collection of crystals and is generally cheaper. Look at the Planet 5 sets. Receivers are also reasonably priced.


And yes most modellers probably do have a complete set-up of Rx and ESC in each model.

Hey thanks for the response but I am not sure I understand a word of it. I am a senior citizen who struggles with my mobile phone, laptop and the internet generally and just want something that will push my partners boat along. 'under some control'
I have seen Futaba systems at around £40 either 27mhz or 40mhsz and wonder which I should buy.


I am sure it is all totally logical to you guys and I truly thank you for responding to my 'blog' but please make it simple for me.
What is this 2.4 Ghz thing?

I see you are in the East Midlands, if you are near Burton on Trent, have a look at their website http://www.burtonmodelboatclub.org.uk and try to get to one of their meetings. The members there will be happy to explain better than I can here.

Give Mark at A Model World a ring and ask him for a 2.4 ghz Raido set and he will look after you and sell you a good set at a good price....Cheap as well

Thanks Barrie we sent a cheque off to Burton model boat club a few days ago for 2013 membership  and hope to 'float our boat' there later in the year. The trouble is when talking to people directly they assume your knowledge of the subject is greater than it is, in my case not good. I met a guy down at their lake a couple of Sundays ago and he chatted on about volts and amps and had me staring into space very quickly.

Stavros many thanks have spoken to Mark, very helpful chap and I shall be sending him a wish list for him to price. Reading these 'blogs' and the information from Mark has made it all a lot clearer and I think I will be converting it all to 2.4 ghz. He is also able to supply a lot of the other bits I need, so great thanks again.


Also thank you Barrie for your advice about Burton M B C it is not too far from where we live about 30 minutes and I do like the water. See how we get on with the members. I suppose like all clubs there
are some you like and all of the others  .
