Scale Leander.
« on: March 08, 2013, 08:27:21 pm »

Hi! i am thinking of building a Leander class frigate,  Vic Smeed style. I have got some original plans kindly donated from a fellow member. I can upscale the plans if need be ( the original model is 30inch in length ) and my question is if i bought a 1/72 Airfix Lynx helicopter to go on the deck then how long will my model end up being roughly?   Secondly, as i am a bit stuck at the model being only up to 45inches in length ( the width of my car back seat ) what scale would this work out at? Thank you, regards, Dave.

Leander class frigate 372 ft long at 1/72 would be 60 inches long at 1/100 would be 44.6 inches long.
1/96 would be 46.5 inches long (1/8" = 1ft)

Best of luck

Thanks for that :-))  Looks like 1/100 would be my ideal scale, i am scaling up some plans for a model frigate up from 30inch to 45 inch. Thank you again, regards, Dave.

There are a lot of names to choose from in this class and navies too. Some navies also changed the class name. Did you have a particular ship in mind? Or are you going with HMS Leander (F109 I think)?

Not sure of any particular Leander in name, my ship would be Leanderish,  not highly detailed but basically big ( 45inches ) and grey. My two boys ( 12 and 13 ) will be running it. I do like the RN type with the Lynx helicopter on it but can't seem to find a 1/100 scale model of the helicopter. Thanks again for all your replies and any ideas most welcome.   Good name by the way Dave,  regards........................er, Dave.

Dave, for 1/100 scale fittings etc. it is worthwhile to look "over there" in continental Europe.

A Lynx in 1/100 is on offer here, for about GBP 14,00:
(BTW, what is Sirmar asking? No price published, would anyone know?)

Look on eBay, bit of trawling under 1/100 aircraft, nut there ate some on there every few weeks! Last week there was a naval lynx and and early army lynx. Also look under the diecast section as ertl and fabbrio done lynx. Do not restrict yourself to military aircraft as many models were made for the civilian market so a quick repaint will suffice!

Hey Klunk,

I myself have been looking for one since years, diecast, civi or otherwise. I am not aware of any other in 96 or 100 than the Sirmar or Udo ones.

All I found otherwise was 72 scale or bigger or 144 scale as the smallest. Do you know which make it was on e-bay the other day?

There is one as a card board model in 1/200, which comes as an extra with the paper model of the Swedish Stealth Frigate VISBY made by Model Art (google it). It is only 1 Page in A4 size and I blew it up with a copier and had it in 1/100! Voila! Only drawback is, it has Swedish markings. But once you have the basic model, it is easy to make your own design!

There is also one, better detailed paper model made in Brazil. It used to be available for free download, but all my links are stumps now...

Will keep an eye out and post on here! Normally I've found them while looking for other kits and I've been tempted to by them!

Hi Dave,

yes, Oliver is still active. One has to commend him for his from scratch design of the Lynx. Only drawback is the nose, which is squarish...

Cheers,
Lars

Dave I am another ex-Juno crewman - I have made this model in 1/96 scale and would recommend it as a building scale.
Several plans are available in this scale from NMM to Jecobin and Sirmar and other companies make parts which you
can buy if it helps with the build

Sirmar were asking about the same, but its a once piece moulding - at least the one I have, with whitemetal rotors.
Whilst it does the job, the one here looks much nicer!
