Mark, do you specifically want Charles Martel?
As you're probably aware, the French Ministry site went down around Xmas and they're re-building it at the moment, but I don't remember Charles Martel being on it. However, there's plenty of stuff on Jaureguiberry and Carnot and, as far as I remember, one of the members on another forum had downloaded the whole lot.
It would be worth looking up The Ship Model Forum or World Naval Ships Forum because I think it was on one of these.

The design of warships was for function ability not prettiness
OK some turned out as good lookers but fighting ability was paramount

The French took the idea of tumblehome to the extreme, following on from the timber warships. The sloped armour makes sense if you think about it, it worked for tanks.

I've thought about trying to build one of these, but wouldn't know where to start looking for plans. I quite like the look of them.

try doing some searches on google books, I do remember a build of the Massena in the works a few years back.. this stuff is to "strange" not to model!!!

their cars pretty strange.Anyway this ship would make an interesting build and something different,although it might frighten a few ducks,

thanks for taking the time to reply chaps,
It is specifically the Charles Martel im after, im aware of the other ships that are similar but there is just something about the 'Martel' that for me elevates in in looks above the other similar boats, have had no luck at all finging drawings and have kind of started my own using photos and stuff from the other ships in the class.
As is pointed out on tinterweb though they were all different , there arent even any halfway decent kits available to use as a basis for enlargement.
im assuming that the hulls all varied as they were different lengths etc and do differ substantially on the Tumblehome as far as i can tell looking at photos.

Have just finished an HMS inflexible from a fleetscale hull and started looking for somthing from a similar era and came across the Hoche, that really blew me away looks wise but as i looked for further info i came accross the Charles Martel and i instantly loved its 'ugliness' to me it looked amazing and brutally fitting looks wise for a ship of war!!

Still looking for plans, even if just to let me know mine are something like ok

I am toying with the idea of making my first scratch built boat but I think it will have to be something simple to start off with,anyway best of luck

All being well, the Ministere de la Marine site will be resurrected and there are original builders plans for about 1000 French warships, from the 1860's to the 1960's to be downloaded for free!

Also look at the waterline models on http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/index.php for further inspiration.

I'm in the middle of building Descartes at 1:100 and it's fun!

the hull shape works well in a r/c model!! I have built the USS Brooklyn (america's tumblehome queen) in 1/96th.. she handles the water great, while more modern ships are rocking and rolling she's stable and steady pushing a great bow wave, plus the hull gives lots of room for the internals. while waiting for the plans, take a look at working on some off the details that were common to other ships, much of the armament in that time frame was purchased and ships of different nations had the same suppliers, plus there is a slew of ships boats required..

A really great choice of model. Maybe a challenge to build but you know how unique it will look on the water.
Huge tumblehome. Bristling with guns and intricate detail. A good smoke generator is a must IMO.

Have had a look at the picturs that and plans that were displayed alongside the book in the above link and interestingly after looking at my reference i would say the plans in the book arent of the Charles Martel, they look more akin to the Hoche and even then not close enough, it sure is a tricky beast to back engineer but i reckon im close.

Am actually pretty useless with computers and dont know how to upload pics at all or would have posted some of my keel and frames 1/96 scale , 47 inches long, i enlarged my plans to 72nd aswell but thought it i scoche too large
