Here's hoping to someone can help. My Dad is a wizard with timber and - with fibreglass - has built a cargo ship that's about 1mtr long & 20cm wide. He has no experience in rc, motors, propeller etc. He's keen to continue its construction with the some badic knowledge of what he needs to build the remote control aspect in as he goes. I've scoured the internet but am unclear where to buy & what to buy. I can post pics on here if that'd be helpful & answer any questions. Can anyone help please?

Phil,
Why not visit a local model boat club? The Bury club aren't far from you, they sail Sunday mornings. There are other clubs nearby, i.e. Horwich, Heywood and others on Merseyside. There is a large show at Blackpool in October which may be worth a look at. At all model boat clubs and shows, most members will be more than willing to show the insides of their models and describe the model's workings. Have some thoughts prepared as to whether the model will have twin or single props/rudders.
 
Many books on model boating are now dated and describe older r/c, drive equipment and power supplies.

Your nearest boat clubs are Three Sisters MBC at Ashton in Makerfield and St Helens MBC in Taylor Park St Helens. The Owls MBC is near Ormskirk if you are on that side of Wigan. Horwich and Liverpool and Runcorn are also near I think thats the lot locally.

NWSMB club or Horwich their 'pond' is on the road to addlington from the centre of horwich, where the squirrel pub used to be, there is small cottages just before the lane that goes down to a farm, the pond is on the left through a locked gate, I believe they still meet on a wednesday night and sunday mornings.
 
Worsley model boat club is at Blackleach reservior in Walkden manchester, then there's the club at mosses gate Farnworth.

Keeping it to the very basics, without the bells and whistle and smoke (literally) You'll need the right size prop/props and appropriate propellor shafts.  Motor/motors of suitable size and couplings to drive the shafts.  An Electronic Speed Controller to run the motor/motors. A battery and a radio control transmitter and receiver.  Most of these items will need to be of an appropriate size/ power for the particular boat.  Choosing the right ones will be the main area of research.  Your local Model Boat Club can be an invauable  resource for the beginner and you get to see all the boats too.
