Looking at building a Flower Class Corvette over the summer as my first warship and I am trying to work out which to go for.
Either the 1/96 Deans Marine kit or the slightly larger Revell 1/72.
Leaning towards the 1/72 as that would give me more space to fit the RC gear and try to get at least 1 gun training, sound module etc. Also I can explain the new addition by saying I am using the superstructure and fittings on a hull that Is my project boat. SWMBO is only allowing me to have 3 boats    - I tried explaining that the Dragonforce 65 is a yacht but the frosty stare put me in my place.

My vote would be Revell 1/72 on three counts

There are loads of build blogs on the Revell 1/72 so you're never going to be stuck for help.

There is a lot of aftermarket bits so it can be built out of the box or as detailed as you fancy

By my calculations the model displacement at 1/96 = 2.5 lbs. 1/72 = 6 lbs a lot more weight and volume to add working features.

Like the logic! Just ordered one - I also get the bonus of the Revell kit being cheaper so more money to spend on running gear and electronics

Have a look at this web site, they do replacement parts for the Flower Class. I'm just about to start my build, I have a 1/72 scale A.P.S Models Flower Class hull, without the fittings.

Some nice bits there. Thinking of a mid to late war build of one that served in the Med. That's about as far as I got.. I do want to get the fwd gun to traverse, put a sound module in there and maybe steam

Hopefully the kit will arrive today. Now just got to work out the conversion to RC process rather than rushing into the build and winging it as I usually do.
So far:
Motor - may get a geared one or bung the spare 380 in.
Fwd turret - would like this and the gun in the bandstand to traverse together.
Sound  unit - multi unit so I can have guns firing, siren, and a few other sounds.
Working lighting - as much as I can get away with.

The main thing will be how to fit the superstructure so I can get my hands in for maint and improvements!

With a model of this size you also have to be careful of weight. A.P.S Models recommended a sailing weight of 3.5 kgs.

3.5 Kg, thanks! I was wondering how much she could carry. I will definately have to look hard at that factor in the build.

 Looks like I have to get my engineering head on to get the strength I want in the ship, the functionality I would like as well have a half decent battery life. She does not have to run for long as its more of a look what I can do/show off in the local lake. Will probably start a build log on it as there does not seem to be  any where keepibg wieght down is a major issue

I would suggest that your easiest path is to obtain the two editions of Model Boats that had the write up on converting the Matchbox kit to RC use. It gives you all the basic gen that you need. I did one over 30 years ago, no weight problems (in fact it needed a bit of ballast to bring it down to waterline) and that was using a lead acid battery.
Simple little model, no extras fitted (time constraints) but it sailed nicely. Only changes made were to a metal rudder and having lost the original prop by someone going astern and hiting a solid object which caused the prop to unscrew!


It's a easy build and I could fancy doing another perhaps more detailled.

Thanks - I am looking forward to the build. Might convert her to an early short focsule as it might be easier for access. Currently surfing the net and reading up on the numerous builds - it's a really slooooow day at work

Ok, now made up my mind(ish). Going for HMS Byrony K192 - she had the longest extended part which should make access a lot easier, plus Ron Horabin did two well documented builds. One was of the Revell kit and another at 1/24.
