Has anyone else noticed that if you have more than one unread post in a section, opening one of them to read cancels the 'New' marker on them all? Using Microsoft Edge.

A couple of days ago, there was an advert for the "Mediocre Modeler Group" on the Mayhem Facebook page.
Out of curiosity I clicked on it.  My monitor immediately flashed blue (with text - but too fast to read) and the computer shut down.
Now, something that can shut down my computer is obviously up to no good, so I restarted in safe mode and ran Malwarebites.
This threw up 11 changes to both programs and registry which I quarantined (can't have too much quarantine!).
Today I have received multiple warnings from Google that my account access is being attempted by someone else.
I've had to change my passwords, including Mayhem (which I know I should do regularly anyway) but its a 'round tuit' job.
Hope no one else has suffered from this.
Bl**dy viruses!!!

It's possibly taking things off topic but, for completeness, what operating system?

Note on Win7. I believe that Microsoft stopped supporting Win7 in January 2020 and so there have been no new software patches or security updates.
I guess that beginner hackers will see Win7 as a soft practice target, and probably most of the younger people I have come into contact with over the last 10 years think that hacking is cool. Also there are fraudsters and malware that targets silver surfers (including our favoured Facebook pages and Youtube channels) because we are soft targets who incidentally are more likely to be running old systems and software with all of the vulnerabilities that entails.
My old Win7 machine is now sitting under the TV, plugged in to run video files, and I disabled the wireless internet connection to prevent security problems.

Surely in all the years of Win7 being around, you'd have thought they would have found and fixed all the problems by now.    I only upgraded from XP a couple of years ago......  {:-{

I expect they found and fixed all of the problems up to the day they stopped supporting Win 7.  After that date, there are hordes of bad guys looking for fresh ways to exploit vulnerabilities that are not going to be fixed.  M$ closed their door on the system, but that let the bad guys a clear field looking for a new set of doors to open in the knowledge that their efforts would not be impeded by M$.

I've always suspected that the vast majority of later updates are just bloatware to make your machine slightly slower, eventually forcing you to upgrade.      Microsoft are as corrupt and as cynical as it could possibly be - look up the AARD code....
