Reversing gear drawings.
« on: August 17, 2014, 10:51:35 am »

I have just finished a D10 steam engine but with all the oil over it I think it is going to be hard to paint it. Do you think I should boil the parts after pulling it apart in hot water to get rid of the oil?  Also I would like to make it go in reverse would any one have a drawing to Gide me please. I live in Australia . Cheers Doug.

Morning Doug........I think disassembly followed by degreasing the components [minus the crank & bearings etc] .....[aerosol spray that the train guys use] then a gentle warm soapy wash, rinse & dry off in your wife's new kitchen oven  {-) would be a great prep to painting

Why not post a picture of before & after.....would be great to see  :-)) ......

According to the OZ weatherman this morning......Wollongong had a rain pounding <*< <*<  last night .......Derek

Thanks for that Derek today I de'greased and washed the parts then heated them up a little with a blow torch and sprayed undercoat on the parts and buffed up all the brass and copper parts. The top coat will be sprayed on tomorrow.  I just picked up some copper tube to start the boiler that is my next job. See you at the track on Sunday  :-))  Doug.

Hi Doug,

When I refurbished my D10's reversing gear, I made a jig for milling the quadrant (or octant?). I fitted the jig on the milling machine's rotating table and accurately cut with a 3mm end mill. It saved an awful lot of filing and avoided any tight spots.

Hi Ian Thanks for that would you have the measurement from the centre of the shaft to the centre of the quadrant. I think that's what you do.  Doug.

Doug,
The center line of the quadrant is One and fifteen sixteenths ( 1. 15/16" ) radius and is 5/32" wide to accommodate a small 5/32" roller.

Before I had a rotary table I hand filed the slot until the 5/32" roller moved smoothly in the slot.
If you have a rotary table you can make the jig and clamp the quadrant to it at  1. 15/16" for milling.

If you don't have the drawing P.M. me your e-mail address and I will mail the details to you.

George.

Hi George,

Thanks for correcting me - I must have used the 4mm (5/32") end mill and not 3mm.
