charging a gell cell
« on: October 03, 2014, 09:15:45 am »

hi

I have a gell cell battery, bought this to charge

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190818527250?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

so looking through the choices no gell cell.

maybe a daft question but do gell cells come under pb battery ?

seems to charge at 0.1 over many hours and should it stop when fully charged

thanks again

Yep, that's it: Pb (Pb = lead).

Set the number of cells (3 for 6V, 6 for 12V) which actually sets the end voltage (7.35V for a 6V battery, 14.70V for a 12V battery). You can adjust the charge current. Unless you're in a hurry, I would charge at C/10 or even C/20.

If you're charging a 12Ah battery, I'd set the current at 1.2 or 1.3A. As the battery voltage gets closer to the end/target voltage, charge current will gradually decrease.

Maximum charge rate is usually given a C/3 but I personally wouldn't go above C/5 ...

I just looked at it thinking of getting one but Oz is excluded. So is a fair bit of the UK.  :o
It says:
Postage to: Europe   Excludes: Channel Islands, Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Scilly Isles, Scottish Highlands, Scottish Islands, Northern Ireland,

There are some good Utube video with instruction of using these types of chargers.   :-)

what I am getting confused over is mine was built with

2 x 3.7 amp hour 6v  gell cells,these are linked together to give a 12v supply

so do I set for 6 v or 12v ?

I'd do each battery separately on 6 volts rather than when connected.

he must have done it somehow, can only see one battery through hatch but not possible to remove batteries , will put up a pic later

bought adaptor lead to fit onto charging cable ( deans connector ) and done check with the charger it reads it as 12.4 volts ?

You can charge your batteries that way, not a real problem, it's just not 'best practice'.
Batteries are just better charged separately, batteries in series run the risk of a failure
and the charge might not detect it and try to put all the charge into one battery.
( Batteries in "packs"  are usually "matched" so  "less" chance of individual cell failure.)

Also not a good idea to charge Gell cells batteries in the hull, build up of gases etc.
Use a fan nearby to dissipate any fumes etc.

Series charging shouldnt pose a problem.
6v sla is 3 2v inseries
Parallel charging is a bit more iffy as one batt wil try and
charge the other if you dont have a blocking diode.

If both batteries are charged as a single 12 volt battery, it is a good idea to check that they have both got to the same voltage at the end of the charge.  If they don't match, the weaker will get to its discharged point sooner and cause a sudden sever drop in performance.  Otherwise, the six cells in series are very much like the six in one box that a 12 volt battery has, they're just in two boxes.
Hopefully the white stuff is just silicone rubber which should allow for a fairly gentle release should the need ever arise, even if the access is a bit awkward.
