Boston Fury

It has been a long time since I was  here, but it looks like I am back.

I have just received this partly done Boston Fury ...



I only got 1 page of the plans. Can anyone tell me if there is more detail on page 2? Page one seems to just be a general arrangement.

The plan # is Mar2281 and I believe it was featured in Model Boats but I am not sure. Does anyone know who supplied the hulls for this boat? It apparently came from England.

Apparently some changes have been made but I have no idea what they are.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Second question ... Can anyone give me any links to examples of trawler deck hardware and fittings?

Mast on the model is too far aft looks to be half the distance from where it is to the aft end of the whaleback , the photos I've linked to are the real trawler but don't show the deck

The wheelhouse looks too square.
The mast when in the right location
should have the stays going fwd to either side
of the whaleback.
Not sure about the companionway aft of the boat..

Gentlemen, Thank You very much. I kind of guessed that the wheelhouse is too square and I am going to make another one.

Davie, what an eye ... I just measured what I have for a plan at this point and the mast is almost exactly twice as far back as it should be. Thank You as well for the links to the picks ... good stuff.

Would you happen to know what a good prop for this boat would be? I have measured roughly and it looks like a 2" or 2 1/4" prop would work. Three bladed or four bladed.

I found this picture on the net and I believe these are the winches that I am looking for can anyone tell me where I can find a drawing of the real thing, or point me to more information on them?

those are double wire rollers ( there's a horizontal roller shaped like the hanging block rollers at each end to allow the wires to go to either the port side or starboard side )


^that is a single roller that shows the shape underneath the larger ones in the model

I will do a card mock up and see if I can get the size right.

While I have you here, I understand that the gallows are normally around 12 ft tall. What sort of size would the metal be that it is made of. I assume that it has a lot of stress on it when working so it must be fairly substantial.

Ours was half inch ( photo above is of my families last trawler David John A169 ) but for a trawler the size of the Boston Fury it would've been around 3/4''.

I have seen old film of them being made and they are an I beam heated in a forge then pulled around a former and allowed to cool.

Make the gallows out of over scale material , slightly thicker than scale won't really be noticed and will avoid a slight knock breaking them

Thanks for the measurements Davie.

I am making a card mock up.

I am having a hard time identifying this hull. Mine is 48" long. The Mountfleet Typhoon one is 55 and the Kingston one is 42 1/2. The plan I have does not have the same deck dimensions at all. I guess I am really going to have to just do a trawler representation for sure. I'll look at more pics and lay it all out and see what I come up with.

Are they all scratch built ... a kit ... are there plans? I think one comes in the Boston Typhoon kit but that doesn't seem to be available separately.

I have heard from Mountfleet and the winches are available seperately. These look to be excellent value if I lived in England, but the currency conversion at the moment will put that out of reach.

I am going to have a go at a scratch built one ... would the life size main winch drum be around three feet in diameter?

These show the Arctic Cavalier ( sister to the museum trawler Arctic Corsair ) and most winches for distant water side trawlers were of a similar size and this should give you some idea to the size of them

the barrels would be around 3ft diameter by 6ft wide with a the wire stopping about 6 inch short of the max diameter ( each barrel could hold up to 1000 fathom ( 6,000 ft or 1nm ) of wire

The drawing below is of a model representation of the trawl winch of the post WW2 trawler Navena. You may find it helpful. Navena was completed in 1945.

Still here on this one and it will be slow. I have just been given a Mr Darby hull and since it has been on the to-do list for 20 years, it has taken over it seems. I have made a couple of mast base fittings but not happy with either so they are on the redo pile.
