I have just obtained Barrie Griffin's plans for the Vosper MTB from Traplet. 


The plans specify 1/4" balsa for the keel and formers. I have 1/8" liteply to hand that I bought for a model that I have had to postpone building, would it be detrimental to the build if I used this instead of balsa?


Also I just discovered there is a DVD available covering the build, any one recommend this? As I am still a novice with powered models and it is only about a tenner I suspect getting it could do no harm.

A 1/4" is a !/4" light ply is partly balsa anyway. The plan material is surely only a recommendation. Balsa is light and easily cut and is therefore a popular medium. Except in aircraft and warship superstructures weight is not usually a concern. Go for it.

I built my model many, many years ago, and used 3 mm. ply bulkheads, 1/4 x 1/4 spruce stringers and 1/16" ply skin sides and 1/32" ply underneath.
I still have the hull although it has been chopped and changed several times.
Propulsion was by several diesel engines from 2.5 cc. to 5 cc. and she performed beautifully.
