Hi Guys
The other week as i may have mentioned in one of my other posts, that i with my brother bought my father a new boat to work on for next year. We intend to keep him busy after he has finished restoring the Graupner Adolf Bermpohl.
The same guy we bought the new boat from was also selling a Billings Boat St Canute plank on frame kit.
I couldn't help myself and had to buy it!

So i think come this winter after i have finsihed the other various projects i would like to make a start on this.
Really happy with the kit, but it definitely looks like this is going to challanege my woodcraft skills as i have never attempted plank on frame hull ever!

So I know it is very early days, but what would be a recommended power unit install?
I would hazard a guess at low rpm high torque.
This is also a small model. So is a 400 with direct drive a good option or should I go geared drive or different altogether?
I am thinking I will just run 7.2v pack as I have loads for other models.

Don't know if this is a good idea or not, but just found an old fan motor rated for 20V DC and 2A with max 3600rpm
I am thinking running this motor with my nicad/nimh packs 7.2V but will need to source a speed controller which is flexible.
I will also open the motor up and run some heavier gauge wiring and see how she works, but i reckon that will give me really low RPM and alot of torque. Being under-stressed i think she will run cool maybe aswell, but some tank testing will confirm that.

the motor You have posted a pic of may be to slow on 7.2v



I built one about 20 years ago,  (and still have it), I think I fitted a 385 motor and use a 7.2v racing pack battery with a 10 amp speed controller.


If I was you I would  get on building the hull then you will see what room you have to work with and possible ways of mounting the motor.
I could take a couple of photos if you want...

I built one many years ago and from what I remember, there was very little room inside for anything more than a 385 motor.I think a car fan motor would be too big.
I never did put a motor in it.

A few pic's of my tug that I built In 1997 (still not quite finished ) , it has a mfa motor that runs on a 7.2v racing pack.
If you would like any close up pic's just let me know.  She sails really well I wish I had drawn around the hull frames to make a bigger one....
The real tug spent a few years at Exeter museum back in the 80 's -90's .

Looks nice and well finished

I had read the real tug had been in the UK, but then sailed home

Definitely helping with enthusiasm of wanting to start off the build. I just trying to get a few things together before i start so i can just keep going

Question. What is best glue for hull.
My thoughts were epoxy resin for the main structure and then use some white water resistant pva like you can purchase from screw fix. But not sure they are most ideal adhesives for this model?

You will not be wrong if you have a look at Titebond no 3 it is a alphatic resin , a lot more superior than normal PVA.

I probably just used exterior wood glue ,but that was along time ago ,
I would go with David's suggestion ,after using Titebond 2 on my latest models without any problems so Titebond 3 should be even better.
Once the hull is ready paint it inside with resin

Newest update. Sewing pins on order to help pin planks on frame. Also ordered some Titebond2.


Before I start however I am going to finally take a look at finishing my outrigger and then start the Canute :)
