A question for the mariners and ex-mariners.

Is it still possible to travel across the globe by ship, as a paying passenger? Not a cruise, just travel.
If so, what options are there?

I don't know if they still do them but you could get passage to south america or back or both directions should you choose on board Fyffes banana boats, they used to sail to from Bristol. I remember reading this in one of the shipping magazines in the 80's, really plush first class type travel, they only had room for maybe 12 passengers at a time so it was close knit but reasonably priced.

there used to be an advertin the back of Sea Breezes magazine from a company offering working trips on cargo vessels, max 10 people per trip, charged daily, so it wasn't a free trip in exchange for work, but I haven't read the mag in years so don't know whether it still advertises.
pick ups were Tilbury, Rotterdam and Southampton.

Hi an interesting question, looks like you get good accomodation at about £100 per day, which is roughly the cost of a balcony cabin on Queen Elizabeth. 
Recently I had a 17 day cruise to Venice but towards the end I felt I had had enough 'entertainment' and was happy with a comfy position on deck a swim in the pool but I did go dancing in the evening.  Lots of walking was the downside together with the waiting to get transferred when visiting a port.  The transfer boat I was in on one ocassion broke down and would not start.  We got off quickly and went on another boat, just as well as some people stayed and were delayed for ages.

On the web site for freighter travel the details of all the insurance and visas needed (China is a rip off) is a bit of a deterrent but apparently I am now too old!
Ah well!
