Hi all Model Mayhemmers,
I'm new to model boats but have been into RC Heli's for a very long time.
I'm looking for a model kit that will take me quite a while to finish doing an hour or so in the evenings and I think I have decided on the Amati Riva Aquarama but I was also looking at the Legend Model Boats line up but I think I would have to buy direct from the USA.
I would be grateful for any thoughts as I'm not looking to change anything in the kit but just build the stock model. Also I@m not sure if I want to go the RC route but maybe as I've got all the Radio systems already.

hi Dave, you state that your previous experience is with rc helo's. was this on 35mzh or on the newer 2'4 gzh.


if the former , the radios on 35mzh are  illegal to use with surface craft, for safety reasons to flight that might be taking place close by. if the latter on 2.4 gzh, then there is no problem using the sets for your boat.

2g4 runs most of rotary wing ops.
Good Heads Up though in case of lack

as for the ferry, I don't believe it is too far off being finished. Certainly he is working towards having it ready for his holls on the Clyde late July, but I believe Dave [Milbourne] is helping him to set up the radio equipment at the moment. But looking at the diagrams that Dave  has supplied for all the wiring they are braver men than me.....can't understand any of it, lol.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the welcome.
I've been on 2.4 since the day it came out so no worries there 
I have a Spektrum DX 8 2nd Gen with voice so I hope that will be ok.

I've not done anything for a while but I hope I'll get back to finishing it soon.
I've pretty much decided on the Riva and I will be going RC.
I'll be ordering from Cornwall Model Boats as they seem to have the best prices.Missed one on Fleabay a couple of months ago but that wasn't much cheaper than a new one with postage etc.
Anyway thanks again to all for the welcome, and I'll see you in my build  blog.

Hi Dave and welcome to Mayhem.  I am currently building a Legend kit (MIss Severn), albeit very slowly and rather sporadically.  Yes, you have to buy direct from the US and pay a fair whack of postage.  However, they are high quality kits.  The parts fit together well, the instructions are well written and detailed and the fittings are nicely done.  As with most kits, there are a few spots where some fettling is needed but overall I would recommend Legend Model Boats.  It is a big investment for a first kit, but if you are reasonably confident and take it slowly there is nothing that demands superhuman powers.  It might be worth contacting Rich Kohl (who is Legend Model Boats) and asking him which of his kits he thinks best suited to a first build.

I am now fully decided on the Aquarama but I was wondering would it be possible to convert to a  twin turbo jet motor system and has anyone tried it.

Hi Dave
It sounds like you would like you boat to be very fast!!!
Are you going twin motors or single?
What size prop/s and number of blades are you planning for the boat?
These brushless motors have a lot of power.
My 640mm Sea Hornet has a 28mm 1900kv 750watt motor on 3S 2650mah Lipo Battery with a 30mm 2 blade brass prop.
I can cruise around scale speed on about 1/3 throttle, but, it is a little rocket on full throttle( over 40KPH).

Hi canabus,
I don't particularly need it to go too fast its just I fancy the look of the water jets coming out of the back.
I've no idea of props etc yet as it will be my first boat.
If it's too complicated I will just leave it with the recommended specs but with brushless motors and brass props.

I have just ordered my Amati Riva Aquarama from Cornwall Model Boats.
When it arrives I will start up a Build log. I know a few have already been done but as I've never built a boat before I will need some guidance I think
