FluidMaster units come with a soft, self-centering conical washer.
Push the unit down through the hole, line it up and hand tighten the nut from below. 

Reconnect the water supply.

LOL, this job has fought me all the way. I went out and bought a conex \ compression nut spanner, cost me 8 quid, undid the conex nut no problem to disconnect the inlet pipe. But then I couldnt shift the brass nut that was immediately above it. The inlet pipework was in the way to do much and really put some grunt in. So, as Im replacing the bottom fill valve,I just cut through that. Sweet.
Then onto the wing nuts holding the  close couple fitting. One, finger tight, the other rusted and wouldnt budge after copious sprays with WD40 and gentle persuation. I had to hacksaw that off as well!
Tomorrow it's cistern off the wall and measure up for new screw in plasterboard fittings to resolve the wobbly cistern and give the porcelain a nice good clean. Then it's put it all back together again to see if it works!

Hehe. Yep, when I got the cistern off, found it had a 'doughnut' of the foam type and the huge rubber one in the kit I bought was, well, just too big. Had to go out and buy a new foam doughnut this morning, cost almost as much as the full close coupled kit!

Some times you can get the Doughnut to plump back up by putting in to soak in Hot water.

Done loads of these use the old one  apply a good quality silicone sealant the both faces. Refit into the pan  the silicone will seal the bottom and the underside of the cistern. No need to buy new ones

Good tip but wasnt going to happen with the original foam doughnut. It had welded itself to the old metal plate and parts of it came away when the cistern and pan were separated.
Cistern is now back on, properly screwed to the wall and no leaks. Only got the other two toilets in the house to do as and when they go faulty but at least I know now what Im doing (and they only have iso valves to mess with).

To be fair, the only reason I had issues were one, the original plumbing firm didnt properly fix the cistern to the wall imo and two, my last plumber did a good job with the fitting (it didnt leak) but I guess he didnt anticipate me having a go at replacing a faulty bottom fill valve.
