Birth of a new Stuart D10

Bonjour,

There is no two Stuart D10 identical.
Max, an outstanding modelmaker, is finishing a magnificent Stuart D10 equipped with a mechanical coupled water pump. Admire the details of his manufacture.
Since the original crankshaft was not originally drilled, Max made a coupling for the pump shaft and made two bearings instead of one to support it.

Good looking engine seems the timing is a little off (problems in self starting) sure it will be sorted  :-))

Yes, Maw has to review the timing after mounting the pump and I was surprised to see how a degree of shift of the eccentrics could affect the operation of the machine. I thought that 120 ° between the two was mathematically correct, the reality shows the opposite ...
I also understand why it is impossible to make the two excitations in a single block of metal, independently of machining difficulties.

To avoid any vibration or friction which would disturb the operation, my friend Max has replaced the initial coupling by a TOC for the water feed pump :https://youtu.be/C5ATzAKX_Ww
Next step, accurate tuning (quite difficult to obtain on both sides) and steam test  :-))

Bonjour,
Max, the friend who had the extreme kindness to make me this machine Stuart made it very tight and, after half an hour it is already untied.
At 30 psi it roars and turns like a clock to 15 or even 8 psi. Some details are still to be fixed before the boat can go on the water, but it is well born as you can see it : https://youtu.be/kFyBAtKFvXY

You have good eyes Calin  O0....I see the white fitting on the outside of the hull, but cannot see it being connected internally

There does appear  :o to be a short length of clear plastic tubing [with a bend] in the vicinity...however not sure what it is or where it goes

Both of you are right, the output of the by pass is supposed to be just over the waterline, but I have not tested yet the boat in the water, so it will be a surprise. Never mind, the important point is that the input is under the waterline to push the water in the pump and avoid anu defusing :

OK thanks Raphael..... I now see in the video  :embarrassed:......the bypass valve at the pump body and clear tubing to the discharge valve

The one thing that is not clear, is that a pump suction lower down in the hull directly below the discharge?...if so, the owner must be fortunate to run in clean water good enough for the boiler feed [although I also see a small disc filter in the suction line] but this is only for house bricks  >>:-(

The water line is the white one on the hull, I have added 3 kilos of lead to avoid a capsize. The Stuart D10 is definetly a powerful steam machine even at 2 bars (30 psi) and the pump is a plus for the autonomy of a 20 kilos boat  :-))

Works nice! I would place the bypass water exhaust above the water line, because it would look very nice to see it letting water out, like on many real ships where you have a cooling water exhaust at the side.

If you discharge the bypass water below the waterline how will you know if the pump is working.

Bonjour,
I fully agree with you, we should have installed the bypass water exhaust above the water line for practical reason and nice looking.
Besides this, I let the water go through the by pass only to prime the pump, after, its flow just covers the steam consumption, so the bypass valve is closed.
I have checked its work by tilting the boat, and the RPM of the machine decreased just a little when the water was oriented to the boiler.
This is not a majour issue, I can change it.

I have solved my water leaks problems and, at the end of the video, you can hear the effort made by the machine at low speed to run its pump : https://youtu.be/OtLh60pTfaQ
Next step, put the plant back in the tug, add 5 kilos of leap (the boat is 1,30m long, 0,25 m wide and will weigh 20 kilos, the steam plant by itself weighs 6,5 kilos without water and gas) at appropriate locations and test iton the pond when the weather is more lenient :-))

This first navigation allows me to validate the quality of the machine Stuart D10 made by my friend Max and to discover the improvements that I must carry to this steamship. Alas, two successive incidents will very quickly interrupt my tests.
The measured autonomy is still 1 h 30 min limited by the gas.
