Hi Gents,
First I would like to wish All MBM Happy New Year.

This is my new project, which if there's interest I will do a build log. The model will be a fully scratch build of a WWII Akizuki Class Destroyer at 1:100 scale.

I'm using Kagero 3D book and 1:200 scale drawing which I've scaled up to 1:100, as my basis for the model.

The hull is made from 3mm ply frames, 2mm Balsawood skin which I've painted with resin. The deck is made from 2mm ply and will have diamond plate plaster card covering.

I've attached photos to show progress so far.

More please Mr 888. This looks to be an interesting build. The sheer on that bow is going to insure your bow is dry in all but a rain storm

A friend in Japan sent me plans from Miyuki Kai, for the Naganami, and Yugumo, and the Kagero.
We have framed up two hulls for the Kagero class in 1/72nd scale, And I have started on some details.

Wish we could share parts...

Thanks for the feed back, yes it's a shame we're not building to the same scale, would have been nice to share fittings.

I plan to use the torpedo tube as a master for moulding once I've added some more details , as with the range finder and doors will also be used as masters.

I do like your fittings , they look very detailed, clean and sharp.

Ian, like you the bow flare was one of the things I liked about the ship and which drove me to start making this model

Made the rudder last night,

My Usual methods is to use a photo copy of the rudder from the drawing as a temple , then transfused this to 4 x 2mm plastic card, which I laminated, after sanding to shape I use tippex as a filler, then use 150 grit to sand to a fine finish.

Tippex used as filler? Interesting. I have heard of model engineers using it whilst silver soldering to mask areas they don't want soldering.

Do you have to be more careful whe sanding it?

Hi Ian,
I picked the Tippex tip up years ago when making Airfix kits, where parts did not fit well. Plastic modlers used it as a joint filler. I find It flows in to joints and scratches filing them up well.

I let it dry over night before sanding, once the part is painted , I've never had any issue with it flaking off or being affected by water.

I can understand the water resistance as it is solvent based (or was) so this may also help with adhesion on the plastics that share the solvent perhaps as their 'plasticiser'.

This gets more and more interesting

Over the last few weeks I've been getting the hull ready for detailing and painting, however I've build the transom deck with some fittings which I'll make moulds later.

The cylinders are depth charges I presume? The end detail is neat.

Hi Ian,
Funny you should ask, I've been thinking about updating this build.

But with supporting the wife in her hobby ! Show dogs, going to Crufts, being asked to come out of retirement to be a trainner, so now I'm working two to three days a week. I've not had much time for this build.

However I've been doing some model work making the master fittings for my Shannon lifeboat , so not been going on with the Akizuki.

Akizuki is a graceful looking design. Most WW2 era Japanese destroyers could best be described as 'functional' in appearance, not this one. I could go for one of these at 1/72 scale!!

Alan, it would be a big model ! But at 1:100 it still would look good attacking PMBDT convoy

Think of the Brownie points you are earning assisting your wife! She does look good, and definitely has a crafted look rather than a wartime emergency sort of look.

HI T888 Not sure if you know the carrier was sunk by the IJN. I think the IJN ship Tone had something to do with it.

Yes I did, if I'm correct ? she was the only U.S escort carrier to be sunk by surface warship gun fire ? During the Battle off Samar.

This funnel has more curves than spaghetti junction ,I don't think the designer knew what a straight line was. This funnel will require a lot of sanding & filling.

Don't worry, it will look good in the end especially with all the detail gubbins on it.
