Collecting my Maggie M kit this week    My first venture into Slipway. I'm told this isn't exactly a walk in the park so I'm looking forwards to learning new stuff. I'll be doing this with brushless too if anyone has advice on suitable size and KVA

Hi Taranis

Slipway shows a 3 blade 50mm prop for the kit.
The Raboesch prop chart shows 3 to 5 blade props maximum RPM as 7000.
So divide 7000 by the battery voltage(eg) 7.2(2S Lipo) equals 972kv.
So a 950 to 1000kv 35mm brushless would work.

On 11.1 volts(3S Lipo) 630kv, the same.

A 35mm brushless fits a standard 540 brush motor mount, but the shaft size maybe larger.

A brushless motor is generally far more powerfully than a brush motor.

On a side note, I am using a 540 rock crawler brush motor( 65 Turn( 7.2 2S 4000mah Lipo)) in my Hellen fishing boat which is about the same length .
Pushes the boat over scale speed with a 50mm 3 blade prop, but I trim back the throttle for forward speed.
In reverse I cut the throttle to 80% because it was stopping in it's own length from full forward.

I bought a large FPV drone - it's amazing - 6-axis stability, controlled via traditional handset or through a smart phone - which is also the viewer for the FPV with it's own wireless link.   It also features 'hands off' hover!    The phone clips to the top of the Tx if you are just using it as a video link.


Amazing what £30 gets you now.

Should be OK if you limit the throttle back as on 3S the motor would over 2000 rpm for the max of the prop.

The 50mm prop for Maggie  M Mbe,
Needs about 3000 revs for
scale speed I think. It's a fat
lump of a displacement hull
and the motors from Slipway
either 6v or 12v churn out
slight ly less than 3K revs.
7000 revs is the max for the
prop, not a target

I'm definitely cutting back on this buying models lark - I bought four boats in July (plus one I was given back by my daughter after 25 years!) and in August I've only bought one! That's what I call willpower.


This month/week/today's purchase is a new-in-box Billing's Polar - as I had one I bought built a while ago, but sold it, which I later regretted as it's a good looking boat. A few fraught moments in the last couple of minutes on eBay, but it's mine now!!


Same hull as my Samson II, and that's a great boat to sail.

It was my birthday and my wife took me to Halfords to buy me a DashCam for my new Volvo. Afterwards I was 'invited' to go over the road and push the trolley round Sainsburys for 45 minutes. It's amazing what they sell there, and how lethal people of my age are with their trolleys. Must give it a miss in future.

I have bought a Model Slipway's AZIZ, from off one of the guy's on the slipway's Facebook page, just hope that the newer kits are better than the older kit's as I said that I would never have another kit from Slipway's.

The exchange rate being absolutely pants just now made this just shy of £40 delivered. Still not a bad price and only seems dear because I'm used to HobbyKing    but they don't have the goods this time, nothing of suitable spec even out of stock

A bit of history first, I purchased my kit of the Tsekoa 2 some 13 years or more ago from Dave M at a show and she was one of the first that did not come with all the running gear, as I started making her I found that some of the parts were to big or to small to fit, the rudder post had to be cut down so that the deck would fit, there was no mention of this in the booklet, booklet more like ramblings than instructions,  the wheelhouse glazing was so bad that I had to replace it with better, as for the deck crane just don't go there, the wheelhouse has a taper to the rear due to the rear parts being smaller compared to the front parts of the wheelhouse, this model has been in and out of my loft as many time as the Christmas deck's.


When I moved house the for-deck and wheelhouse get damaged so I asked Slipways if I could purchase some new parts or could they scan the parts so that I could repair her and continue building her, they said "no" they could not help.   


To be fair and square  Slipways had just started out back then, so leeway can be given for some of the short fulls, and going on what I have read on the forums and in the press they seem to have got there act together, so I am looking forward to see how this model goes together.

Fred, I don't doubt that what you are saying is true but it is these sort of comments made out of context which can be very damaging to our manufacturers. Your previous experience was 23 years ago but people will have assumed it was more recent. I visited Model Slipway on behalf of Model Boats magazine in 2009 and you can see my article here:

It paints a completely different picture and one that is supported by most people I have talked to since. Nobody is perfect but MS in my view are up among the best.

I had originally bought a copy of this after 1982, not sure when though, and lost it, so bought another copy - used, a fresh copy would cost in the region of £300 to £800 GBP depending on the seller, I know in 1993 whilst at Sizewell B, in a porta-cabin having a photocopy of the inner fold out and hull curves trying to create a program for the stringers that would be between the main frames on a spectrum 64, still have the data and the working out for the program, though if I were to do it now I would use excel. Was looking to build a 1/72nd RC model, though I still don't have the space to build one.
