Hi there , after a State & House move last year back into the model boat building again, this one (actually started 4 but cut back to 2) is of a trawler that was based at our home port of Brunswick Heads N.S.W for many years, called the "Fay-Jay" 45.6 ft x 11.25 ft x 4 ft  timber built chine designed by a well Known local boat designer and builder Bert Beatie , she was built at Byron Bay (across the road from my Grandparents house) around 1964, the model is of 1:16 scale I have made her to a couple of photos of her around 1981 , so she comes in at 34 inches.

Hi next section pf photos ribbing and planking using mainly 10 x 2 mm limewood. I mainly like making carvel hulls , in the past the chine boats I have made were 2 mm ply on frames then fibreglass inside, this time decided to run the chine and deck stringer and rib her before planking ,a lot more work involved ,but looks more realistic as to how the originals were built.

Welcome back Brian! It is so good to see you back and building your beautiful hulls again. Who needs telly when we have this sort of quality craftsmanship to read and view? I love those ribs between the frames, it makes the hull structure look like the untiled roof of a cathedral.

Hi, some more of the build.
  1 & 2 . Filling in the deadwood area.
   3 .  Then all the shelving installed prior to fitting her beams used Tasmanian oak on those and the beams.
   4 .  All the deck beams in.
   5 .  Lift out sections in place .
   6 . Stern view shouldn't have any worries of her tail dropping off
   7 . Lift out sections prior to plying and deck strips...

Hi there, I suppose you guys are getting ready to sit around the telly to watch the Wedding there  ......well next photos.
 1 . Decided to finish the inside of the hull with the white paint finish, first up gave her 2 coats of resin then the white undercoat & Gloss finish, pre fitted the running gear and ply under lay for decking  before the painting.
 2 . Ply fitted and also the red cedar deck cover strips fitted.
 3 . Giving the outside of the hull a light coat of estapol.
 4 .  Laying the 5 x1.5 mm limewood decking strips with black cardboard strips between each piece.
 5 .  Decking finished , just have to clean up around lift out sections etc before a coat of estapol.
 6 . Showing the 4 models I had on the go, ready to give all their decks a light coat of estapol, I worked on the 4 models till I had them up to finished bullwarks then just concentrated on 2, as it just felt like I wasn't getting any where .

Cripes! It is a boatyard in miniature! It just needs the scaffolding and hull supports to be a diorama.

I googled Estapol because I wondered what sort of product it was. The many answers all point to it being interior grade, ie not weather proof. Is it your intention that these will eventually be display models or are they going on water?

Hi Brian60 , I should correct myself,my apologies bit slack at calling what it should be, and get out of the habit of calling all varnishes etc as Estapol ,I have used Estapol in earlier builds , bit of discoloration no crazing etc, the last few years have been using 'Cabots Cabothane Clear'  clear polyurethane interior/exterior.The last couple of builds using 'Feast Watson' Spar Marine Varnish, actually bought a 4 lt tin of this to re varnish the stair case in the house, but so far have been using it on the model builds , cheers.

Hi there, next shots of the build are. 1  & 2 . All the post in position, same deal as with my other builds have small dowels in the post base to peg them to the decks cover strip , and the bottom plank ( with scuppers cut) for the start pf planking the bulwarks.
3 & 4 . The bulwarks across the stern cut to take the capping side rails ,and fitting the port side rails. 5 . This is the stage I made the 4 models to, before continuing with just 2 of them . 6 . Also made the 4 bases at the same time.

Hi there ,some more of the build. 1, 2 & 3 . Start of base and studs etc for the w-house. 4 . This time i didn't run the beams across in one go, tried something different , cut section of the main beam out to fit over the short beams already installed and locked down each top side of w-house. 5 . Windows

Hi there, next photos of the build. 1 & 2 . of her before installing the ply on top of cabin. 3 . Starting on the side awnings, these will lift off with the cabin so they are pegged into top of the capping rail so as you don't get any movement in them in the future. 4 . bracing behind them where they fit to top of the awning, bit more strength. 5. How they look finished .

Beautiful work once again BB.
It amazes me how you can draw the plans from a couple of photos & get the shape so true. I tried for three weeks to draw a plan & it ended in the bin.

I saw Fay-Jay on the water at our club lake this morning, and she looked absolutely marvellous. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera so no photos, although I think Brian took some which he may post here later. Brian is a master craftsman, and all his models are masterpieces.

Lovely work Brian     I really like the shape of these prawn trawlers and would like to make one as my next build - I'll have to try and find some plans. At least we know where to come for advice!

I love seeing all the beams and frames under the roof material. It is so easy just to use a slightly thicker piece and sand it to shape, or laminate sheets to bend them to shape, but they are lovely Brian

Hi guys thank you for the comments , next few photos. 1 & 2 . All the bits n pieces made and pre fitted for the Fay-Jay. 3 . Painting stage, below waterline 1 coat of varnish , 1 of undercoat, then a darker mix of undercoat & gloss .
 4 . Painting inside of bulwarks 1 coat of Varnish, 1 coat of undercoat and showing 1 of 2 gloss coats. 5 . Bits n pieces from the 2 models  during their painting stage. 6 . Hull and gantries with their final coats on, on the hull sides  1 coat of varnish ,2 of undercoat an 2 of gloss ,hand painted and the last antifouling gloss sprayed on. 7 . W-house finished ,with all her bits n pieces attached...
