Help from Japan?
« on: August 06, 2018, 09:08:18 pm »

I seems to be my lot at the moment to aim at "interesting" torpedo boats of the late 19th century. One that came into view via another pic from Graces Guide is the attached.
So, has anyone any contacts in Japan who might be able to help regarding the good ship KOKATA, built at Yarrow in London before they went north, and shipped in pieces to Japan for assembly.

Well, I am not in Japan, but perhaps I might be of some help. Starting with the March 2017 edition of Warship International magazine, Volume number 54, Issue #1, is a very in depth, four part article," Torpedo Boats of the Imperial Japanese Navy". I think it mioght prove improper to post it, but if you will PM me, I'll see what I can get to you.Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,
Any info would be much appreciated, especially on the odd details such as colours etc.
It's possible that the original drawings etc. are still held by the Yarrow archives in Scotland and I'm awaiting info from there but, as I said, all info is important.
Cheers

Doh! %)
I cant reed mi own tieping.
Thanks Terry,
Yup, most of the spec is pretty straightforward but with a nose like that and it's turtle back it could be interesting to build at 1:35  which would give a reasonable size and displacement. It was experimental, to a Japanese design, as what was to be an armoured TB with up to 1inch plating around the important bits. Unusual in a world where torpedo boats were almost invariably fast and light.

Many thanks Jonathan.
I've now had a chance to look through what you sent and although a lot is pinched from The Engineer as are the details in Graces Guide, there are several leads that may prove out. :-)) Tony
