MFA large motor?
« on: December 15, 2018, 09:33:48 pm »

Does anyone recall the above? I had two years ago looking for one now
They resemble fan motors all black body, about 3” dis and same for length. Three hole mounting plate. Last ones I bought cost around £20

That would be a Smiths fan motor, they made them with a 1/4” or a 5/16th” shaft.

Yes Rob.....obviously an automotive heater/cooler dash type fan motor.......constant rating ...silent & super low current draw

In these days of OH&S...most Auto wreckers don't allow customers self removal....so the $ has increased ......

I tend to agree. We are going back before MFA Torpedo motors and Marlins, probably twenty years ago, but I think it was a Barracuda.

I had a Veron Fast Patrol Boat powered by a Barracuda and a couple of 12v SLAs 25 or more years ago, looked good on the water.

I have ran these motors for years, 3000rpm on 12 v, about an amp on the bench. I had two in my Arun running on 12 to 18 volts. An excellent motor. I also used them in my Ice breaker and the Northsider with a three to one reduction drive. nemesis

Sorry I missed out the Barracuda has the little tube sticking up at one end, it has always been a speculation as to what it was for, nemesis

Yes that tube is a funny thing to have on it.
what I was thinking is if this was originally a wiper motor in a car or heater fan motor it could been a water drain and a tube fitted to exit any water/damp out of the vehicle .
I might be miles out but cant see any other reason.. I am now about to look at it incase its for oiling a bearing ? (doubt it).

The only way to Lub the bearings is to strip the motor, give you access to the felt that surrounds the sintered bush. it is surprising just how much oil it takes. You can, if you wish, drill a little hole in the dome that carries the aft bearing. nemesis

It reminds me much of a car blower motor I had perhaps with a "Smith's" label I think. I think many years ago I got mine from mobile marine models.  Do t have it any more and not been able to find one since.  I've never thought for a minute MFA made their own motors but happy to be wrong.

Ps that "tube" might be one of the serviceable brushes the text mentions, if so that definitely fits the description of my old blower motor. Ran nice and quiet if I recall. A good chunk of ballast also -it was pretty solid.

this is what is directly in line with the tube.
just took it apart to see exactly where it lines up with.
so all I can think of is it lets you see if brushes are ok ?

it does say provision for air cooling so maybe if you want to fit a hose and a small fan to blow cold air directly intothe brush area top keep cool if running hard for long periods ?

what sort of speed controller would the mfa Barracuda motor need for 12 volt or for 24 volt operation.
im not realy into electric stuff, but have seen a load of cheap esc on ebay and wondering if these realy would do the job
I know the specs of the motor show 4 amp on load at 12 volt and 6 amp on load at 24 volt.
but when simply running this motor through a battery charger I find you realy have to put a lot on this motor to get to 4 and 6 amps.
I know boat props do like  a bit of power , the model will not be a heavy weight monster by a long way. say a max all up weight of around
14 to 18 pounds depending if I go 12 or 24 volts. I will probably just run something like x 50 to x55 prop so only about 2.5 to 3 inch pitch.
I am not after it being mega fast , just 10mph ish so its quick enough to get out and tow back in a broken down boat.

ive seen these and wondering if they would be ok or if these are gimics and I would be better off fitting the old manual type
speed controller from a 7.2 volt Tamiya car ?
I like the idea of the electric speed controller but only ever had one once and blew it up 20 odd years ago.

if these are no good for my sort of purpose is there anything recommended on the cheap
