Plans for RN Colony class cruisers..................
« on: March 15, 2019, 08:26:15 pm »

Hello Everyone,

Would anyone know of a source for plans for the RN's Colony class cruisers? I'm looking for a detailed set for a friend who's looking to produce a quality hull in 1/96th scale.

Sincerely,

Chris Preston,

Other than the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich using the plans archives,  HMS Trinidad plans are available from Profile Morskie.

FleetScale do a 1/128 scale hull, the drawing that use to come with it were not great but it may be a start.
I spent nearly 5 years building HMS Mauritius using the FleetScale hull, and a lot of web searching.

Loyalhanna in the US list the Fiji as in 1939 in what I think is the Sambrook range at 1:200 scale. If so they should be pretty good quality.

I think the one that came from Fleetscale was Sambrook, I my view , is it not in my top ten list of plans.

You may be right. However the Taubman plan is listed as metric 1:200 scale and the Fleetscale hulls are generally  Imperial scales. Of course this could simply be due to reproducing at a different scale.

The Taubman plans are from Sambrook Marine and were originally drawn up by Alan Raven and John Roberts (A&A plans) who were both respected and accurate draughtsmen as well as naval experts.

Looking a bit closer on the Taubman site there is also a listing for Quebec at 1:192 scale.

It might be worth Chris contacting Loyalhanna/Taubman to clarify what is available and the quality of the drawings.

Nick, Dave and Colin.............

Many Thanks for the information, particularly with respect to the Taubman Plans for HMCS QUEBEC - I'll check them out and see which one would be most useful.

By any chance does this help:

The usual NMM price for a high definition scan is £50 though …..

I ordered a plan of Helgoland (I'm a fool for hexagonal turret layouts me) last night from Taubman/Loyalhanna.

Hi. I’ve a spare set of 1/96 Swiftsure /Superb plans from the National maritime museum I can sell you. I’m not sure if they would help as I know the Swiftsure’s was an evolution of the Colony’s.

Hi Glenn,

I believe SWIFTSURE is in the same sub-group of Colony class ships as the ONTARIO, so yes - those plans would be great. What's your price?

Hi Chris. The plans are a full set and are very elaborate, being printed from the Maritime Museum. They are already rolled up and kept in a tube so I can go and check at the post office how much the postage will be to Canada if you could give me your address? I would probably want £30 for the plans themselves. I have a PayPal account if that helps, this method of payment would protect you.
Regards,Glenn.
