Does anyone know of a decent supplier of smallish metal melting furnaces and associated tools, equipment, greensand etc...

Have a look on Youtube as well, there are several tutorials for making your own mini furnaces. They really are basic/lowtech and simple to make. Having said that, smelting is one of the world's oldest technologies.
Not only can you save a bob or two, you might have fun doing it.

Have you had a look round HIS? Their welding dept will surely have useful "ancillaries" and  the safety gear. MIS also, though retail prices are always better in MIS.

Many companies like AIM or Rowlands have a minimum order for their pewters, usually 25 kilos but have numerous alloys available from bendy to brittle, good flow to good bulk so you can ask for your specific requirements. It is easier to melt than Bronze as well because the temperature is nearer that of Lead and can be done over a Gas burner using a good ladle. Like any metal casting, make sure the mould is dry and there is no water leakage near by as it will spit like a "xxxxx" and could cause burns etc. Think water in chip fat but worse

Even if it is pewter - I will be looking to use a electric furnace rather than a gas burner as it is probably safer.


The idea some of the people who may be involved working with molten metal terrifies me already - adding a gas burner into the mix.....

Checked out both HIS and MIS - H&S gear ok - they do have some casting equipment - overkill for what is needed though

 I got myself a small electric melting pot last year  for melting lead ingots for my SD14 as I needed something like 120lb plus battery's it melts around 10lb in about 20mins  its so very safe once melted you pull down on a handle which pull out a tapered pin from the bottom from a hole  about the size on a match stick  so giving you full control don't know if it will melt pewter but has a temp control nob will try and find the info if you think it maybe any good it cast about £75.
