River-class reference books/materials
« on: June 03, 2019, 01:50:11 pm »

Can anyone point me towards good references for the River-class frigates of the Second World War?  Specifically, anything with good photo references involving on-deck photos showing things like reels, ammo lockers and superstructure details.

Google Images is 'tainted' with images from the later River Classes and mostly shows profile views of the originals.

There is a book by Brian Lavery  ISBN-13: 978 0948065 736 published by the NMM with plan of HMS Nadder. . I built a River and its shown in my Portfolio section on my site     johnrhaynes.com  under other models I have built

There is also a comprehensive plan by E N Wilson of HMS Sprey that details all the deck fittings on two sheets. The Floating drydock also carry plans of the PF   USN version  PF 51 USS Burlington.  Here in the UK the firm Fleetscale .co.uk sell my 1/96 grp hull
Tom at FDD also sold lots of detailed photos of the PF USN version which should be available from the new owners

I would definitely echo John Hayne's mention of the Brian Lavery book

There is also the 1/200th card model of Waskiesiu at Neptunia with a pretty good level of detail

Should have mentioned that I already have a plan and a FG hull, what I need is the little things like the type of watertight doors, 4-inch ready-use lockers, hose reels, deadlights, Oerklikon power units etc.  The plan simply shows the RULs as boxes with doors, but having seen Oerlikon RULs in real life I know they have a lot of details on them that aren't represented on that plan.

Thank you for the heads up on the planset and book tho!

Look at my site www.johnrhaynes.com and go to my on-line shop to see all the fitting you will need at 1/96

This hull is 1/72 tho, to match my brother's Flower Class.  I'm planning on getting some fittings from Shapeways.
