RN Type 42, What are these parts?
« on: July 01, 2019, 01:45:24 pm »

Im trying to fathom what a couple of parts of the deck furniture on Type 42, in this case Liverpool, are.

Picture below. Immediately to the side of the rear mast on the elevated deck, there's what looks like a base with a derrick bending off left. What is this?
There's also another tube like structure that seems to start behind the mast, comes to the edge of the deck with another length seeming to go towards the superstructure. What's this? Anyone go a better picture, drawing or idea how this looks?
TIA.

I can't answer your question at the moment but looking closely this photo is 2 ships side by side. Liverpool's dome has been removed?
Possibly by the crane in the background  {:-{

The Derick is a Cary over from when the Type 42s carried a triple torpedo tube mount

hi there, the position where the Phalanx Gun is - there used to be 2 sets (port and starboard) of torpedo tubes - from part of the STWS / 1 anti submarine weapons system firing mark 44 and mark 46 torpedoes.  When they used to load the torpedoes, into the tubes, I believe they used the davit which you may be describing (i.e. the one that you describe as being bent and facing inboard).    I believe the other structure you are describing is another part of the lifting apparatus for lifting torpedoes up onto the 2nd deck from the storage position - which is just abreast of the funnel on number 1 deck.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Hello
The other structure is for replenishment at sea. It is used for light jack stay transfers. There’s a similar structure on the front of the bridge.

Nailed it, John! That gives me all the info I need. I wondered if the tube like structure was fixed to the superstructure but none of the pics I had confirmed this. Thank you.

Another question on parts!
On the rear main tower \ mast, there's a box like structure part way up fixed to the back surface. It can be seen on this pict of Liverpool.
Is this box totally enclosed ie does it have a lid \ covering on the top or is it open at the top?

 that box is a cowling that covers the diesel generator exhausts from the after auxiliary engine room .
It is open top and bottom

Ah, cool! Never thought it might be open at the bottom as well! Thank you very much for the info!
