1/48 scale Furuno Radar
« on: October 10, 2007, 08:48:43 am »

A scrap piece of "Balsa Plank", a polyurethane carving material, and miscellaneous sheet styrene and sticks.

I used some plans posted by Tarsier over at Modelwarships.com...

1. Tablesawed the balsa plank to the correct profile
2. Cut 0.015 styrene to layer over the block, and stick stock across the ends.
3. Added a second layer over the center top
... And reprofiled the lower case and notched it for the base piece.
4.  A bit more styrene sheet on the lower case, and built up the base from stick stock.
5. A roughed out Furuno radar base ready for finishing.

The unit is about 10mm x 7mm x 8mm high,... about 11mm high OA - including the base.
Just a simple matter of adding the antenna.

 :D

The SDM tug was supposed to be my no frills work tug. But being as simple as it is, it seems to be getting as much or more attention than the fire boat.  ::)

No plans to animate it at this time, but I do have that fourth switch on the hydraulic control box that needs a function....  ;)

Oh, and it's a good method to build a radar unit for any scale...  8)

I found that out with the the village I built, people walking past and ignoring the boat  that was in it, but attention being paid to the display.

many of the people who walked past it couldnt help but feel the shrinkwrap, ("ooh what that...?" [touch] "sandwich wrap, very clever") affair

Okay, it functions...
When I turn on the 3.2 volt power converter the radar comes on.
The other four switches will all control power to the lights.

Here is the tiny thing up on the mast and running.
