First I would like to thank Peter for the warm welcome to the group and hope I can in some small way help others but for now a few questions that are more personal to me than say questions about modeling

Early in the year I lost my father to Covid 19 and this was a massive shock and over time things will get better I know and every my dad is with me no matter what.

My father was a avid modeller in all things cars, tanks, planes, and a nice collection of RC helicopters and cars and the odd boat here and there, One thing that was a massive shock was in my fathers estate was a collection of unbuilt kits as follows.

1/200 Bismarck
1/200 Hood
1/350 Bismarck
1/350 Tiritz
1/350 CVN 65
1/350 Warspite
1/350 Yamato
1/350 King George
1/350 Prince of wales
4 different Deans warships
2 Massive 1/72 Warships

There is so much the spare room in our house is not a massive craft room.

Now then the problem I have is I have not done a model kit in over 40 years and back then there was more glue on the outside of the kits that sticking the kit together,  Back in the day there was no such think as liquid cement.

The main question I have is would someone with very little experiance like myself be able to to build the 1/200 kits to a good standard and fit them with rc gear.  I have to say for the last 5 weeks I have been doing CVN 65 and so far loving it but I really want to dive in to the large kits as they are HUGE and would make great RC models

Welcome to 'THE' forum!


Sorry to hear of the loss of your father to the awful thing called Covid. So many people still believe it's not real but it's very real when you lose someone close.


You can almost guarantee that your dad is with you every step of the way and more so whilst you're tackling those ship projects.


I would say that the 1/350 scale ships (mix of Tamiya and Revell???) are a tad tricky to radio control (except CVN65 as it's a bit huge!!!) but not impossible. As for the 1/200 scale ships (presumably Trumpeter) they are definitely radio controllable (I believe Deans do the the running gear etc for the Hood and Bismarck) In both scales some modellers go to extraordinary lengths to super detail these ships with wood deck overlays and brass etch fret containing handrails etc.


The list of ships you have are like a red rag to a bull as far as us modellers go, I'm sure you'll be approached to relinquish some of your models.


Construction wise use a liquid glue such as Deluxe Plastic magic rather than that stuff we all used as kids that came in tubes. A lot of modellers (including me use airbrushes and acrylics to spray paint our models although some still use hairy sticks and enamels!!


Advice on here is always free flowing, so just ask and there will always be at least one of us that's happy to help!!


P.S what are the Deans kits you have and also what are the two massive 1/72 warships???

A german ship Wiesel.  Took him out for a few runs down the local lake and been told if this was still in kit form it would cost quite a lot of money as its not made anymore

I have never know someone to have so much model stuff as thanks to dad I have spray guns glues paints like rows and rows of it so for the next god knows how many years I will be building

1/72nd Type 21 Frigate Semi Kit (Not found the plans yet)


The plans for the above if you don't find them are available from Fleetscale, they're not cheap but brilliantly drawn by Gerald Hitch of Jecobin. I met the chap once at his home in Woking, Surrey and what a lovely chap he is/was!


Forgot to mention Stan (sorry Stan). He's a fount of knowledge and pure skill (as are so many on here). Check out his Grand banks schooner build, very inspirational and a labour of love.


Also the Type 21 is my all time favourite RN frigate. Managed to get on to the whole class during various navy days in good old Portsmouth as well as most of the county class destroyers, type 42's, Leanders, Tribals oh and best was getting on and under HMS Hermes in dry dock after her return from the Falklands. Fond memories!!

I remember watching Amazon cruising up the Tamar from the Fleet Club window when she was "New". Always regarded 21s as the Spitfires of the Navy, quick and dangerous.
