Kia Ora from New Zealand
« on: May 08, 2020, 01:27:05 am »

Hi

As a new member I thought it would be good to just say Kia Ora/Hi to be sociable from the Top of the South Island New Zealand.
I have now lived here for ten years and really love the people, the pace of life and the beautiful country.
Having been a model builder most of my life from scraps of wood as kid through plastic kits to radio control aircraft and cars and now after quite a few years I am building Billings Boats Fairmount Tug.
One thing we are short of in NZ is the range of model stores that the UK has so I tend to order online even from NZ stores.
I hope to learn some tips and tricks from you guys.

Cheers

Hi Andrew

We toured North and South Islands 3 years ago and agree with everything you say. One of my interests is photography and the landscapes are stunning. I'd love to live there but too late now. We have nieces and nephews living there now and they love it.

All the best for your model building.

Hi

Another lesson learnt!
Having just typed a reply to your comment I went looking for a picture and on returning my comment had disappeared and still no picture!

I'm pleased you enjoyed NZ the two islands are like two different countries with less than a million of NZ's five million population living here. The views are as you say quite stunning and we are fortunate to have a property that looks out over Tasman Bay which I thought I would get used to but it changes by the hour let alone the day and even at night it's a great light show especially with the shipping that moors in the bay.
There was supposed to be a picture of the view but I'll have to work that one out and put some pictures of my build up.
When are you coming back Chris?

Cheers Andrew

We were originally planning to come out sooner but delayed our last visit to coincide with a nieces wedding. We have a nephew who is getting married in the near future so hoping to return for that. There are parts of South Island that we would have liked to have spent more time exploring.

Our drive through Arthur's Pass was memorable and we spent quite some time in Queenstown and Wanaka which was fantastic.

I'll get the map out and see where you are.

Welcome aboard Andrew.

One of my sisters and her husband lived for over 10 years near Geraldine, in south Canterbury. They owned and ran a sheep property at Beautiful Valley, a location that really does live up to its name. We had four trips there during their stay, and managed to see most of the country during those visits, from Cape Reinga down to Bluff, although we never made it to Stewart Island. We were very disappointed when they decided to move back to Australia, as it was quite convenient having board and lodging in NZ.

Enjoy Mayhem,

Peter.

Hi Peter

I know Geraldine quite well as the motorcycle group (just incase anyone gets the wrong idea we a retired riding group not a gang) ride through there now and again although Beautiful Valley is a new one on me but I shall now keep an hey out for it. Like you our eldest son used to live in Sydney which was great not only for visits but also for seeing grandchildren but alas they they returned to the dark side (UK).
I hope to benefit from Mayhem and to contribute a little too.

Cheers

Is that still about?
Used to drink Coronavirus as a kid in fact a truck used come around selling it.
Kia Ora orange was mainly in cinema's was it not?
If you pronounce Kia Ora in Maori was it sounds like Kilda and Maori sounds like Mouldi so a difficult language to pick up and I have about as much of it as the English have Welsh!

I think Derek that is the Pakeha (white European) pronunciation but if you want to get Kiwis arguing talk about pronunciation as they all say things different.

Hi Andrew

One of my interests is also motorcycles. I have four, both old and more modern and a 1962 Lambretta TV175 which is the same as the scooter I passed my test on, though that was a 1963, and bought a BSA 650 Super Rocket.

This is one of my favourite shots, I had to wait until the bike was in the right position. Great memories.

Hi Chris

I only have the one bike a 2017 Triumph Explorer Xrt which is a great touring bike they are classified as an "Adventure" bike but its too heavy for off road.
Although I maybe biased but I believe that NZ has the best motorcycling roads in the world for many reasons but mainly low population numbers.
I too had a Lambrette a GT200 which would have been around 1968 and passed my test on a Honda 250 Superdream.
The idea of having a couple of classics is appealing but I find I have no time to do all the things I want now so more projects or toys would not help.
Arthurs Pass I was riding in late summer on just a two day ride but not a place to be on two wheels in mid winter!

Cheers

A lovely photo Andrew. We came over Arthur's Pass heading east on one occasion in quite heavy snow, there were snow ploughs waiting on either side of the summit, and we heard that the road was closed temporarily soon after. By this time my sister and husband had sold the farm at Beautiful Valley and moved to a smaller holding in the Landsdowne Valley, about 10 km south of Christchurch on the Taitapu Road. This leads on to Akaroa. Their farm was just to the west of the Port Hills. I would love to go back to NZ, but given our age and the travel restrictions it's unlikely now.

Peter with the Trans Tasman Bubble plans it'll not be that long till flights across the Ditch will be happening and the airlines will be very keen. We have  friends currently in Darwin so a winter visit there is on the cards via maybe Adelaide.
I have motorcycled just about all of The Banks Peninsular so will have passed the farm its another great area of NZ.

Agree about the roads. There was many a time when I wished I was driving my soft top sports car, another interest, or one of my bikes, rather than the hire car! I'm a Triumph fan as well. My all rounder and touring bike is a Tiger 1050 and I have a Thunderbird Sport and a 1973 Tiger 750. I also have a CCM Dual Sport which  would be great on your gravel roads. I've done some trail riding over here but it's getting more and more restrictive and too many people! NZ certainly seemed to give far more freedom. I shall be reducing the fleet at some point!

Even though I'm retired there are times I don't have enough time for all my hobbies either! Especially in the summer.

We'll get onto model boats at some point!

Hi Andrew and all
I've just joined and saw the entry from this other Kiwi.  I've up to now been doing scale RC helicopters but seem to be slowing down and making a few mistakes so before I chop my arm off I thought I'd try boats, scale tugs in particular.  That Fairmount tug looks a great model.  I was looking at a Billings Smit Nederland on an auction site but was outbid.  I'm thinking of scratch building something like a 1/32 Damen Stan Tug 1907.  The website gives useful scale drawings.
Cheers
Nelson

As an ex NZer to say there is one correct pronunciation is similar to saying that all folks living in the UK don't have dialects. Before the current bunch of language pushers changed things even counting to 10 had some different words depending on where you were. Don't start me, my background includes linguistics, but I'm slowly learning model boats :)
