Today is Thursday July 13th and I have been doing the planking of the upper decks have got upto the the first gun deck on the stbd side and the book says lay from the centre line of the deck to the outside will post the manual shot tomorrow to show how I have to do it the planking is so thin got to be so careful so I'm doing the planking in three's and four's using alot of tape as well.

Friday 14th July 2023 few more hours doing the upper deck planking slowly but surely getting there.

Today is Sunday 16th July 2023, more photos on the planking of the upper deck. The work done is from Saturday 15th July and today 16th July got to really careful as the planking is so thin and you can see alot of cutting thats why you dont rush to get it done no time scale on this job, then back onto the hull.

Tuesday 18th July 2023, today's posting is still on the planking of the upper main decks both sides are planked just have to carefully cut the the rest of the circle where the main battery sit on have shown with the photos the three positions they will be sitting and also the bridge section alot of work to be done on that over the weeks to come tomorrow I will turn the model over and trim the over size planking and very lightly sand them off, next is back to the hull a few more jobs to do ,the bow to be finished and the stern to be sanded and painted with primmer then undercoated and full coat after.
I can tell you from my heart as this is my first ever build of a warship thats made all in wood, I'm really enjoying building just taken my time a few hours aday and 5 mths into the build and I will still not rush the build also many thanks to everyone who have posted comments thank you so much.

"I'm really enjoying building". That's all that really matters in the end. But you are also producing a lovely model and we are all enjoying watching it emerge from that pile of wood. Keep it up!

A tip for smoothing the planks is to use a Stanley Knife blade as a cabinet scraper at about 45 degrees. Long strokes and it will very gradually take the high points off and give a satin smooth appearance. An observation which may be incorrect is that I notice you are planking the quarterdeck where the aircraft sit - I may have miss-read but wasn't that area a steel deck, could be wrong.

Kiyo......speaking the Mother tounge where IJN Yamato was built, you may have knowledge as to why the Teak planked decking was not extended to the stern Quarter Deck, or the Forepeak Deck?

My only knowledge of a comparable Ship is BB63 the Missouri, where her decking extended to both extremities Fwd & Aft....I walked the length of her & confirm the Teak decking was in 1987, kept in superb condition

From images, it appears that the Royal Navy vessels of somewhat similar or and earlier vintage also had the Teak decking to both extremities

I do not have much knowledge to the point about the planking you referred ....

Give me some time to research into..

But this tendency could be seen in (scout) plane operation decks in many major IJN ships like heavy cruisers and battleships.
1; IJN battleship Ise in her final configuration. modified to operate more planes...namely "Battle carrier"??
2; IJN heavy-cruiser Takao, damaged seriously by UK sub in July 1945.

While not an expert on naval ships I would imagine the lack of teak decking in these areas is due to the dirty nature of the activities taking place. The forepeak has the anchor handling machinery and would be subjected to mud and rust from the anchor chains, both leaving any teak decks in poor condition. The aft deck where there is aircraft would be likely subjected to oil and petrol during maintenance of the aircraft as there doesn't appear to be any hanger space for this. Steel decks would be easier to clean after any spills.

Hi to the above follower's some great photo's and comments, Geoff here is my answer to your question when I was doing the planking each strip were the same length and around 1/2 mm thick so had to be really careful, when the planking was set into place I left them over night until I had done the stbd side then had to cut out the shape for the aft main gun the photos this all the planking done will show you that I did not plank the quarterdeck.Geoff thanks for following my build and love everyones comments.

Today is Friday 21st July planking all cover up and the hull has had another coat of primer, photo of my build work-top all tided up and clean ready for the building of the bridge over 105 metal parts to be cleaned up prime and put together have show you a photo of all the parts that will be used and also a photo from the manual on what's to do, its going to keep me going for awhile so while putting parts together ,priming then writing the parts down on paper to know where they go and what they are I will be going over to the hull to see what is needed to be done some busy days and hours ahead looking forward to it.

today is the 26 Jul 23 over the past few days I had started on building of the bridge with over 100 parts, doing bit by bit and sanding the nice and smooth 400 and 800 sandpaper alot of hours have past rubbing the parts I have use down also using metal primer painting by hand you can see where the bridge will be sited on the last photo.

Looking very good like IJN Yamato with the bridge in addition to the powerful hull, wallace.!!

The recessed part in the middle of bridge is said for anti-blast measure coming from tremendous
firepower of 46cm (18 .11inch) main batteries on the main deck.

Todays is Monday 14th Aug 23 been a few days since my last post, but I have been working on the model every day on the building of the bridge just about 100 bits to clean and prime and let all dry and then fitting, taking some apart as I was not happy with and then having to clean again and prime etc but its coming alone.
This model has really tested me but I have really enjoying the build and I hope you are all happy as well.

Today is August 29th 2023

The photos of the build are the making of the Chimney Assembly , the Main Guns, the Rear Bridge, and the Rear Mastand the last two photos are the Bridge, the Chimney,Main Guns,the Rear Bridge and the Rear mast all place onto the main structure to see how they are fitting and looking, all have not been finished more parts to go on and then primed I just want to see how they are fitted.
