Advice on Photo Etching Needed
« on: December 16, 2024, 05:28:31 pm »

Can anyone give me some advice?

Progress on my 1:150 scale liner model Miltiades has come to a virtual standstill due to my inability to make the railings and supports of the promenade deck to an acceptable standard. Basically  it entails 4 bar railings (including a capping rail) plus a base rail with vertical supports extending to the boat deck above.

I have tried using brass wire and rod and alternatively Plastruct rod with the aid of jigs but with only one remaining eye I cannot solder with the necessary accuracy to give a neat and even result. The Plastruct rod has been a bit more successful but it is still difficult to get a consistent result and the rails are slightly too thick. If I use thinner rod they are too fragile! See example in the photo below.

An alternative solution would be to use Photo Etch but the only commercial offering that comes anywhere near what I need is  the Aber type:

https://www.super-hobby.co.uk/products/Ships-railing-five-horizontal-bars.html

However the spacing between the uprights is not quite right and I suspect that the material would be a bit on the thin side. So what i really need is something similar to this with a slightly different pattern incorporating full height  and a bit thicker, in other words a bespoke design!

The basic design is pretty simple, being a mixture of horizontals and verticals of different dimensions. The height between the decks is 15mm and the height of the capping rail is 7mm. I would want a base rail to assist in securing to the deck. I can describe all this with the  relevant dimensions but can't do either the artwork or etching myself.

Looking online it would seem that 4D Model Shop could do the artwork and etching but this could be a bit expensive. Has anyone any experience of commissioning something like this  and the costs involved? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Any good not 1:150 but could help you

Thanks but I have spent a lot of time researching this. Aber is the only one that comes near so a bespoke solution is needed.

I have, in my previous life as a commercial model maker, used PPD who are extremely good - http://ppdltd.com/

I'm not sure what they'd charge to produce the artwork but they have, in my experience, always been extremely helpful and very competitive on price ...

Don't be put off by their location in the north of Scotland, they're very efficient and I know they do a lot of work for commercial / architectural model makers.

Maybe give them a call?

Hope this helps.

The etching is comparatively cheap Colin, it's the artwork that costs.

Dave, thanks for the suggestion, I had thought about it myself but the 3D components would be too fragile. The uprights are about 0.9mm in diameter and the rails around 0.4mm. The plastic rails in the photo below are 0.5mm plus paint and look a bit too heavy.

Ian, would the artwork be relatively cheaper if it is just a set of straight lines (section of railing) duplicated many times as opposed to a more complex design?

If I am really stuck I could simulate the railings being canvas covered as they often were when at sea. (second photo).

I've used PPDltd many times. Always fast turnaround and excellent quality.
If you'd like a hand drawing up the pieces I'm happy to help. I've done this type of thing many times and it's simpler than it sounds.

Just to add that like Steve I have used PPD over several years and they have always delivered the goods and are very helpful in getting the artwork up to scratch.  They have a pretty comprehensive guide to producing the design at the website.
