Info on HMS M15 Monitor
« on: March 12, 2008, 09:13:18 pm »

Just picked up plans for the HMS M15 Monitor and was wondering if anyone knows of a build log for this ship.  I can not find much info and no pictures on the real thing and thought that if there was a build log it would be almost as good.  On the hobby website thee is a photo of the model (I assume it was built by Paul Freshney since the plans are his) and I am really interested in how that model was assembled and fitted out.
Thank you for any assistance or guidance

There's a blurry photo of her firing halfway down this page;

The M15 Model was indeed built by Paul Freshney. You should be able to get copies of the articles published last year in Model Boats which go into great detail on the build of this interesting vessel. A similar ship, Monitor M33, armed with two 6 inch guns is undergoing preservation in Portsmoth Dockyard and I have a lot of pictures if they would be of interest.

Thank you for the quick replys!  A shame that the picture is from so far away and as for the article, if you knew which month of the magazine had the article I would be most grateful as I can not seem to come up with it on my own.

Again, thank You

Robert, it was a major feature in four parts running from September to December 2006.

thank you everyone.  Ordered the magazines and now have to wait for them.  I am going to try a bread and butter hull using blue foam then glassing the outside .  If I want to use plasticard to create hull plates, will they go under or over the glass?

Yes, probably over as otherwise the glass will blur the plating lines but you will need to get advice on the best way of sticking plasticard to a grp faced hull securely.

The ship is coming along and it is frustrating but rewarding trying to scratchbuilding as much as possible.  After two trys building a foam and glass hull but finally picked up a hull from Models By Design.  Also picked up The Big Gun Monitor textbook but I can not figure the color scheme.  Saw some color pictures of an M17 model( light grey with brown decks).  Any ideas ?

Thanks

M33 in Portsmouth Dockyard has recently been painted in in a camouflage paint scheme.

looks like "something completely different."  Do you know of any posted pics that show port and starboard views of that type of pattern ?

Thanks for the help

.  Afternoon Colin - some pictures would be great.  I have always liked the dazzle pattern on ships.  Reminds me of the Twilight Zone.  When you have time the photos would be great.  I am at hidden

Thank You

Hi Colin

Is this paint job 'dazzle'? As in, designed to confuse the observer as to the size, shape and direction of the vessel.

Or is it just a disruptive pattern, making it harder to see the vessel by breaking up the lines?

Robert,

Pics sent to you.

Mark,

I think it's a simple dazzle scheme as the lines are geometric rather than curved.
